for well-rounded health,

This review is from: The GL Diet For Dummies (Paperback)
I bought this book and "The Big GL + Diet Planner" by Fiona Hunter so I could start getting all the nutrition I possibly can from my food without feeling like I'm missing out on something, and without feeling guilty when eating some of my favorite foods. This diet helps level out your blood sugar levels which if unstable, can cause plenty of ailments-diabetes ofcourse being one of them-but can also cause mood swings and hunger cravings for more of the sugary, high-carb food you just ate!
This diet is more of a "slow" carb diet. The carbs that you eat are more slowly digested and so they sustain energy much longer and your body still has something to restock up on glucose in the muscle. (ok if my science is off a bit, just read the book:) overall this is a great diet. For those who are on a low-carb diet, beware-this book does have a few places where it talks quite poorly of the Atkins diet, but it does also mention that without the Atkins thought on carbohydrates, nutritionists may have taken a bit longer to getting around to seeing the real effect carbs have on our blood sugar levels and health overall. simple diet. easy to follow. anyone can do it.

I like the book overall...but, its written by someone in England,
and there are many food items that we don't HAVE here in the USA so...its not really perfect...but it DOES give you a lot of good sound info on the GI plan...and as the title states..for DUMMIES, it IS easy to understand.

A good tool for those interested in a glycemic load program of eating. Good explanations of the body's processes, as the whole GL way of eating/dieting is very sound and certainly works for lowering high Blood sugars and makes weight management very easy. Also look for "The glycemic Load Diet" by Dr. Dan Thompson, another great book.

Not up to date with latest info,

The authors may have some good suggestions about glycemic load but they are way off on some of their facts, such as a low carb diet can cause muscle loss. A University of Illinois study published in August 2005 issue of the Journal of Nutrition showed that the women who ate a low-carb, high-protein diet had more productive workouts by burning more fat and building more muscle mass than those who ate a low-protein, high-carb diet.
I gave it two stars for the meal suggestions but don't give up your low-carb lifestyle. Use this book with caution and only to "cheat" intelligently. |
