With the skyrocketing popularity of engine swaps of Gen III and Gen IV V8s into older vehicles, it was about time that one of the automotive technical publishers would produce a book on the subject which is both comprehensive in scope and accurate in its coverage. GM LS-Series Engines: The Complete Swap Manual meets those goals.

The author, Joseph Potak, has impressive Gen III/IV street creds. He's an ASE-certified, professional engine builder and service technician. Since 2002, he has worked for Texas Speed and Performance on Gen III and IV V8 powered cars and trucks. Potak is a Moderator at [...] and previously wrote How to Build and Modify GM LS-Series Engines.

The book is focused on fitting pre-1997 vehicles with LS-series V8 engines with a lot of emphasis on swaps into pre-computer cars and light trucks. Obvious candidates for these kind of engine changes are older GM vehicles but the book is written for the DIY who is putting a newer GM V8 in any vehicle be it a C3 Corvette, a '57 Dodge pick-up or a 1932 Ford street rod.

Most the information an engine swapper needs is in this book. Invaluable are chapters on engine mounting, controller and wiring harness selection, fuel system design, cooling system configuration and transmission choice. The author's near-decade of work with Texas Speed and Performance putting Gen III/IV V8s in older cars serves the reader well in that the key issues confronting someone fitting an older vehicle with modern LS engine are covered in detail.

Another outstanding characteristic of this book is its photography and illustrations. All the imagery is in color. The author's extensive experience with the subject matter shows in the book's selection of photos.

Bottom line? If you're a gearhead DIY, intent upon putting a modern General Motors, Gen III or Gen IV V8 into your latest classic hot rod project, you need GM LS-Series Engines: The Complete Swap Manual.

I have purchased several books on LS engines and this one has lots of info not found in the other books. It is presented in a logical manner and is well worth what I paid. I reccommend this to others who are wanting to learn about these engines.

This is a well organized comprehensive overview of the process of swapping an LS motor into an older vehicle. It gives good information on the various issues one will encounter along with a few solutions which are DIY and a few from the automotive aftermarket right down to the vendor part numbers. However you will need to find other sources for technical detail such as ECU pin and wiring diagrams. This is a good resource for gaining general knowledge and compiling sources for parts. It is not a DYI step by step manual.

Very nice detailed information, for those who are looking to do an LS swap into another vehicle like an older muscle car. Lots of information and color photos along with resorces for finding suppliers for your swap. Also informs you of the costs that can be associated with deciding to proceed with this kind of project.

This is my only complaint, the Title. The book is as complete as a general information type could be, a truly 'complete swap manual would have to be specific to one vehicle and one engine. this one gives excellent general info about the many different LS type GM motors and is perfect for getting started. Recommended as a first read prior to planning an engine replacement project, lots of great advice on which engine suits the readers needs and vehicle. Lots of suggestions as to getting more specifics as the project moves ahead. Lots of info regarding transmission issues too!
