A worthy sequel, April 1, 2000
This review is from: GODS OF THE GREAT AWAY (Song of Earth/Michael Coney, Vol 2) (Hardcover)
This is the follow up to The Celestial Steam Locomotive. After reading the first book, I couldn't wait to read the sequel. I'm glad I did. It continues in telling us about the lives of all the characters from the first book, and the ending doesn't leave you hanging. This is a wonderful story. Michael Coney writes in a manner that allows readers to SEE the story. This is an A+ book.

Obscure book/author; Excellent piece of fiction., July 22, 2011
This review is from: GODS OF THE GREAT AWAY (Song of Earth/Michael Coney, Vol 2) (Hardcover)
I picked up this book from the bottom of a forgotten pile at a local university fundraiser (donated books, $5 to get in, $1-3 per book type deal) a year ago and it has been one of the more unique and interesting sci-fi/fantasy books I've read to date. Gods of the Greataway is a mix of both sci-fi and fantasy according to my definitions of the genres.
The story is told from the points of view of several characters and whole alien species who tend to unite, separate and join back up as the story (or shall I say stories as there are three parts) progresses. The cosmology of the world (Earth, 80,000 years into the future) is spectacular, described beautifully, and which has a mix of advanced "left over" technology and a world that for the most part has reverted to a more "primitive" way of life. Add to your sci-fi and you have characters who've lived as demi-gods for thousands of years, a spirit link (I forget the name) connecting worlds light years apart, demons, blob people who've evolved off of life support and from what I can tell a line of the Celestial Steam Locomotive (which I haven't read, but plan to buy today) from Vol. 1.
If anyone has more of Micheal Coney's work I'd love to hear about it. Send me a comment. He seems to be a more obscure author but I very much enjoyed this book and would like to read more by him.
