It's hard to believe that five years after first discovering OJC CDs were being remaindered, and then after hundreds of purchases, there would still be a few titles for me to unearth during a trip to Boston two weeks ago. Sure enough, this Art Pepper title was one of five discs I found at the Newbury Street Newbury Comics, though in fairness I did have it on my Amazon Wish List for some time. While I love classic jazz of the 50s & 60s and own more than 3000 albums from that era, I probably own only a few hundred jazz albums made after 1980. Art Pepper is a perfect example of why -- I adore his recordings for Pacific and Art Pepper Meets the Rhythm Section, but for the longest time I didn't bother with anything past 1960's Smack Up and Intensity. All that changed a few years ago when I found a used copy of Complete Village Vanguard for less than a buck a disc. I simply couldn't pass up a bargain like that regardless of how good the music was, but upon listening to it I was not only blown away by Art's playing (and of course Elvin's drumming), but also by a pianist I had never heard of previously -- George Cables. Pepper said that Cables was his favorite pianist, and considering Art recorded with the likes of Hampton Hawes, Russ Freeman, Carl Perkins and Wynton Kelly, that was some compliment. I love Art Pepper. I just got turned onto him a few months ago and have bought several CD's. This is not my favorite one but it's still Pepper. My favorite Art Pepper CD is Winter Moon - it can't be beat.
