4.0 out of 5 stars The Stuff That Dreams Are Made On, November 17, 2006

This review is from: GOLD AND WHERE YOU FIND IT: There's Gold in Them Thar Hills! (Paperback)
GOLD AND WHERE YOU FIND IT is one of those little 'particular interest books' that are wantonly placed by the bedside to provide a little distraction on the way toward giving up the day's pace and drifting into slumber. That is unless the book is by the wonderfully honest and enchanting writer Gabe G. Kubichek (see 'Dreaming of Amerika, his other book about his flight from Hungary during the Revolution to get a flavor of the author's talent in communication!).

Reading the Preface, in the straightforward humble manner that is Kubichek's warm trademark, and it becomes obvious that a brief glance at this informative and entertaining book will not be a sleep sampler. Kubichek knows just how much personal history to infuse into the 'how to' book about gold mining to make us stay with him. He toys with the history of gold mining, tickles our imagination with some sage comments on panning and dredging for the eternally seductive natural metal, and then proceeds to offer instruction on exactly how to look for gold. He gives easy to follow (and purchase) tools lists, information as to the proper time of the year to look for gold (varying from location to location) and why, and then spends the remainder of the book discussing the states and locales favorable to gold mining today. There is enough information packed into this brief book to saturate the curiosity and stimulate the ardor for finding gold - and then Kubichek takes us by the hand and assists us with a sturdy reference list at the back of the book to make us well-educated novice gold miners.

The book is short (123 fact filed pages), written in a terrific conversational style without dumbing down the reader (would that an editor caught some of the punctuation and spelling and reference errors...), and is so contagiously presented that it is most probable that the bedside lamp won't be turned off until the reader has finished this warm volume in toto. But oh the dreams it instigates...Grady Harp, November 06
