Gore's Countdown II Shorts are designed for comfort and protection for weekend rides and on the MTB tour. The shorts offer an 11-inch inseam with a lightweight, moisture wicking nylon outer short constructed with non-chafing flatlock seams. Meanwhile, a removable liner short with Gore's Sport chamois provides padding with minimal bulk. The shorts are outfitted with two front and two side pockets with Velcro closures and a zip pocket on the back.

So these shorts have an inner set of compression shorts with the built in padding. They're removable so you can wash them separately. The build quality of both pairs is good, I think they'll hold up. Here's my main gripe, there's too much padding. I realize this is subjective and everyone's rear and gear down there are different. For me, my gear was numb after the first ten minutes wearing these. Something about the padding cuts off my blood flow to the area. Could be too wide, could be to thik, but something about the padding makes for a VERY uncomfortable ride for me.

These shorts are great for riding and getting to the ride. You know when you stop by the gas station and you don't want to be that guy wearing spandex shorts....padding is great and they have helped me ride longer comfortably, than I thought I could.
