5.0 out of 5 stars Should be titles GPRS simplified!
Great book on GPRS. I have read a couple of others on the subject, but this one I found was the best one out there. Written so anyone can understand. Examples and the structure of this book is right on the money! Great reference book, I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn about GPRS and have it stick!!!

2.0 out of 5 stars Marred by grammatical and technical typos, December 9, 2002

This book "could" have been a great book had Mr. Bates proofread it once before publishing it. Having read GSM and GPRS papers before reading this book, I have to say that this book is replete with technical snafus [a case in point for those who suspect is on pg. 30 third paragraph of the Introduction to GSM chapter "paging message sent over PAGCH"] Now anyone with half a brain knows that
1. PAGCH is a GPRS logical channel NOT GSM.
2. It is an Access Grant channel NOT a paging channel which in case of GSM is PCH and PPCH in GPRS.

Now someone new to GPRS would be confused as hell after reading this [I admit I was confused for a couple of minutes too :-), since I am not supposed to be the expert but Mr. Bates was]

Structure wise the book is okay but needs a stringent review of the rambling grammer and the blatant mistakes. IMO its not worth forking 60 bucks. If Mr. Bates is reading this, I adjure you sir to take some time off from your speaking tours and correct the mistakes in this book.

Am giving it two stars for good layout. Taking away three stars for incorrect content.

5.0 out of 5 stars GPRS Made clear, February 21, 2002

Not only is this book precise and educational, I will be able to refer back to it several times through out my career.

It explains the multiable layers in laymen's terms. I am impressed with the way the book starts out with the basics and leads the reader into the newer technoligies.

Not only did it help me to understand, GPRS technology, but also goes into detail about the protocols that can ride on it, Frame, VPN's, IP etc.

Not unlike the authors other publications, this book can be used as a tool. I highly recommend this book.

1.0 out of 5 stars lot of typos and poorly organised, September 19, 2011
This review is from: GPRS: General Packet Radio Service (Professional Telecom) (Paperback)
Got this book to get introduction about GPRS, as I am slightly familiar withe GSM concepts and other wireless technologies. But after the introductory pages, it jumps from one concept to other without any relevance. For example if you are reading chapter 10 SGSN to GGSN interface, you expect details about GTP more than the security concepts although no one expects protocol details, but if it is being touched it should be touched properly, for example it explains about the fixed GTP header and tells points to LFN in one of the octet, but there is no reference provided to what is LFN. So basic book writing skill is when some thing is being mentioned provide the details of that or do not provide. If any acronym is used then give details of it. This section is a total bummer without giving any overall details about GTP. More over I have to agree with other reviewer that lot of proof reading has to be done before publishing any book which is clearly not done in this book.

Excellent book! Written in easy to understand language but also provides the detail needed to help in understanding this technology. As with all the books written by Mr. Bates, this is a qualty piece of material.

1.0 out of 5 stars Badly written and explained, February 15, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: GPRS: General Packet Radio Service (Professional Telecom) (Paperback)
This is by far the worse book I have ever read to-date. The book jumbles the explinations and is badly explained and lasid out. There are no layer-by-layer explinations that are clear, concise and easy to understand.Save yourself the money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great reference book on GPRS, a must for your Tel.library, March 22, 2002

This review is from: GPRS: General Packet Radio Service (Professional Telecom) (Paperback)
This book has a well structured flow and brings you up to speed quickly on GPRS. Easy to read, yet very informative.

This book would also make a great textbook, it helped me to come up to speed quickly. Great explanation of layers and interfaces. To the point, with plenty of supporting illustrations.
