By default, the PC and LVC versions output data in the industry standard NMEA 0183 data format, but may also be user programmed to output data in the Garmin proprietary format. The USB version produces data only in the Garmin proprietary format. All three versions of the GPS 18 come complete with non-volatile memory for storage of configuration information, a real-time clock, and raw measurement output data for sophisticated customer applications. The USB 2.0 full-speed version of the GPS18 is also compatible with USB 1.1 full-speed hosts. The LVC version additionally provides a pulse-per-second logic level output whose rising edge is aligned to the UTC second within 1 microsecond.
The GPS 18 LVC Receiver is a GPS sensor targeted to OEM clients for use in automotive, fleet vehicle, and electronics applications where a small, highly accurate GPS receiver is needed. It is WAAS-enabled and comes with an integrated magnetic base. GPS 18 LVC Receiver comes complete with non-volatile memory for storage of configuration information, a real-time clock, and raw measurement output data for sophisticated customer applications. It provides a pulse-per-second logic level output whose rising edge is aligned to the UTC second within 1 microsecond.

Great GPS if it's what you are looking for,

This GPS comes with 5 bare wires that you have to hook up to power and a serial port plug yourself. It has a PPS (Pulse Per Second) output on one of the wires for time synchronization applications (the serial interface and USB versions are missing that). If this is what you need then it's a great GPS at a good price. If you want something to easily hook up to your computer you should look for the USB or the Serial interface versions. The cable on the GPS is about 3 meter long (9 feet). Garmin also makes a version with a 5 meter (15 feet) cable. Amazon used to sell this version but calling it (confusingly) "Garmin GPS 18 GPS Sensor with PC Cable" making it sound like it comes with a "PC compatible cable" (whatever that is). I imagine they got a lot of returns because people didn't get what they expected.

I bought this receiver for my APRS setup in the car. I have its older brother GPS on my pickup and its been running for years. The compact design and magnetic base made it a breeze to install. I simply cut off the little connector that came on the cable and installed a DB9 to match my Opertracker+, set the Opentracker+ to provide +5vdc power and the GPS came right up. First lock out of the box was very fast. This GPS will go from Off to locked in 30 to 45 seconds so I get my first position fix not long after I start my car, recovery from poor signal locations like parking garages is great. The default output sentences should work fine for most users, it did for me. I did however take the time modify the output sentence configuration since my device only understands 3 sentences. It was easy with information available on the internet.
