Product Description

Amazon.com Review

You may not be familiar with the GPX C3948BI CD player, but it's a great unit and definitely worth your consideration. It's loaded with useful features, such as 22-track programming and random and repeat play modes. It comes with an adapter kit that lets you plug the player into your car's cassette player for tunes on the road and a six-digit LCD that shows the track number and time counter. And there's an impressive 40-second antiskip buffer, which GPX calls an Anti-Rolling System, to keep your tunes from jumping forward when you nudge the player.

The C3948BI itself is impressive for the price. It handled the tremulous, high notes of Dmitri Shostakovich without sounding shrill, and it delivered the thumping bass line of a Cowboy Junkies song without sounding muddy. The bass boost switch didn't produce the kind of bass you can feel, but for our taste and for a portable CD player it sufficed. At a midrange volume level we detected a slight hiss, but when we adjusted the volume up or down it went away.

Try as we might to foil the Anti-Rolling System by vigorously shaking the player, we couldn't get the player to skip while the antishock was engaged. Then we dropped it on the floor, and to our surprise this plastic clamshell-style player held together nicely. We found the controls sensibly placed, and the buttons big enough and easy to push.

Our one disappointment with the GPX C3948BI was its headphones. While they look sleek enough and have an inline volume control/remote, they were uncomfortable and produced weak sound. In fact, using a different pair of headphones, we discovered that the player was capable of better sound and higher volume than was detectable using the ones supplied. Otherwise, we found the GPX C3948BI a very satisfactory portable CD player. --Cintra Pollack

Pros:

  • Nice features for the price
  • Good antiskip protection
  • Delivered both high and low notes with pleasant clarity
Cons:
  • Slight hissing sound at midlevel volume
  • Uncomfortable headphones with poor volume output
  • No resume feature

GPX may not be the first brand name that comes to mind when you think of personal CD players, but the company's C3948BI Blue Ice CD player is definitely worthy of your consideration. It's loaded with useful features such as 22-track programming and random and repeat play modes. It comes with an adapter kit that lets you plug the player into your car's cassette for "auto" tunes on the road. The translucent blue clamshell CD lid and matching headphones are attractive without looking silly, and an inline volume control makes it easier to adjust the sound level while you're driving or sitting in front of your computer monitor. A six-digit LCD shows the track number and time counter. Last, but certainly not least importantly, the C3948BI uses a 40-second antiskip buffer--which GPX calls an Anti-Rolling System--to keep your tunes from jumping forward with the slightest nudge of the player.

4.0 out of 5 stars GPX-cellent!, May 27, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: GPX C3948BI Ultra-Slim CD Player with 40-Second Anti-Shock Protection and Car Kit (Electronics)
This player is everything you could possibly want in a CD player...plus a couple of extras. Here's the scoop:

*The player itself looks really sleek and it's also cool that you can actually see the CD spinning while you're playing it.

*When I tested the ESP (Skip Protection), I shook it, smacked the cover, and even dropped it once or twice and IT DIDN'T MISS A BEAT!

*The car adapter kit works perfectly and you don't have to be a techno-whiz to figure out what goes where.

*It comes with all the cool features: track programming, intro (though I don't really use that feature), and my personal favorite, random track select.

And now, the downside:

*The headphones are flimsy. My suggestion is to buy another pair or use a pair you already have.

*One of my favorite features on other CD players is missing on this one and that is the Resume feature. If you don't know what that is, Resume makes it so if you stop the CD, it automatically resumes where you last left off when you hit play again.

*The ESP was working a little funny for a little while. It would play, but then the player would just shut down or something. Anyway, it seems to be working fine now.

Okay, class, let's review what we learned:

Pros: Cool look, easy to use, car adapter kit, and it doesn't skip a beat with ESP!

Cons: Flimsy headphones, no reume, and slight ESP trouble.

Bottom line: If you want a cool-looking CD player at an affordable price AND it comes with a car adapter kit, buy this one!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good value, great product, February 4, 2000

This review is from: GPX C3948BI Ultra-Slim CD Player with 40-Second Anti-Shock Protection and Car Kit (Electronics)
I was looking to update my old CD player with something new to go running with and listen to music at work. This little player is lightweight for running, doesn't skip, and has nice bass. I found the headphones to be a little cumbersome with the volume control for exercise purposes, but that is probably because I am used to another set. I highly recommend this product. Also, Amazon sent it off in 24 hours and I got it the day after I ordered using standard shipping. Order the batteries (cheap anyway) so you can use it right out of the box. This product is great and really worth the money. It is more of a purple color rather than the ice blue in the picture, but I think it is still very good looking. Buy it!

5.0 out of 5 stars An unbeatable CD player at an excellent price!, June 26, 2000
This review is from: GPX C3948BI Ultra-Slim CD Player with 40-Second Anti-Shock Protection and Car Kit (Electronics)
Since my old CD player was skipping often and a bit outdated, I decided to try the GPX Blue Ice CD Player. At first, I had my doubts (I had never, ever heard of GPX in my life). Having used it, though, I have to admit that I am very satisfied. First of all, I absolutely love the icy blue color (who wouldn't?) and the way that you can see the spinning CD while you're listening. This player is surprisingly slender and lightweight, so it's easy to carry around. I thoroughly tested the ESP (Electronic Shock Protection) by dropping it, bopping it, and slapping it silly. It didn't miss a beat! And now for the coolest feature: Have you ever been bored out of your skull during a field trip or a looong car drive?(Is the Pope Catholic! ) Well, be bored no more! The GPX player's awesome car adapter kit is easy to use (you don't need to be an electronics whiz to use it), and it enables you to bring your music wherever you go. The bass boost system is also great. Best of all, this CD player is priced very nicely, so you can use the extra money towards a new set of headphones (The included pair is a tad flimsy). If you are a music fanatic (like me!), than I suggest you try out the GPX Blue Ice CD Player. I love it, and you will too!
