If you come across this model, note that there are two versions: one made for the international marketplace and one for US-only (though both have been distributed in the US).

You want the international version: Be certain the box says the unit is capable of both NTSC and PAL output. This will assure that you can play international disks from all regions. (You may need to find the region hack at videohelp-dot-com, but both the units I bought were code-free out of the box.)

If the box does not mention a choice of output, do not buy, even for the bargain price. You'll be getting the US-only version which does not have the built-in converter. This will restrict you to Region One, NTSC (North American) format disks only.

I had the (I assume) odd opportunity of seeing both versions displayed side-by-side in a job lot store. If you see a similar display, you may also note that the box for the US version is SLIGHTLY smaller than the international. (In fact, for that reason I almost bought it -- thought it'd be easier to carry; but then noticed the NTSC/PAL option was not mentioned on the U.S. box. Sure enough, after doing some online research, I discovered why. See above.)

That said, this unit is an adequate gap filler. If you need a cheap way to access disks outside region 1 or to convert PAL format to NTSC output (or vice versa) you can add this to your chain of entertainment devices.

However, being a cheaply made model, it's prone to malfunction, as some reviews here have said. The malfunctions of mine -- which only showed up recently -- are mild, but annoying. The tray only stays open for a few seconds before sliding closed.

I bought 2 of these DVD players. They were put in one position on top of the TV or on a shelf and never moved. One only worked with the remote from the very beginning. None of the buttons on the device worked. Within 2 weeks the other didn't work at all. Not with the remote, and none of the buttons worked. What a piece of JUNK!!!!

Sears had a sale on this GPX DVD Player for a mere $24.00! I was looking for a low price DVD player to replace my CyberHome CH 300S. The GPX like the CyberHome plays all my PAL DVDs from Europe and Asia on my NTSC TV beautifully. It also plays other regions DVDs and homemade JPEG photo CDs. No complaints! This DVD player is highly recommended at this giveaway price.

I brought three of these. one hardly worked straight out the box. only one remote doesnt work. two of the three dvd players just stop working. one minute u are watching a dvd and when you take it out to change it the next disc or the same one for that matter comes up "bad disc" i have only had them for about two and a half months. I am so disappointed. so now i will have to buy a new dvd player. It is really sad that they were only made in may of 2007.

This unit is unbelievable value. Extremely easy to set up, and has RCA, S-Video AND Component output. NTSC/PAL compatible, and a 2 second google search shows how to make it multi-region too.

Great unit, unbelievable price!

Worked fine....for about a week. Then it crapped out. Power light would just blink, but no juice. It found its way into the trash quicker than it took to be delivered.
