4.0 out of 5 stars It's a GPX! Not a Bose!
I can't believe the negative reviews of this. It is what it is - an inexpensive portable. Sure, if you jack up the sound all the way, it will distort. It doesn't have expensive components that give you additional bass because they are not putting expensive speakers in an item that is supposed to be cheap.

1.0 out of 5 stars AVOID THIS - Cheap, tinny sound and lasted barely a year
I bought this because it would fit on the shelf space available in my house and it would take input from an MP3 player.

I discovered that

a) the sound quality is poor, even compared to other "cheap" players. I usually can't tell any difference between good and bad players, but even I could hear how tinny the music sounded.

b) any sort of...

It doesn't have expensive components that give you additional bass because they are not putting expensive speakers in an item that is supposed to be cheap.

For what it's worth, it's 10 times better quality than GPX was just 10 years ago. It fits the bill perfectly for a portable to drag around the house or set up in the office. The MP3 line-in works great - no annoying hum or static. It picks up stations better than my Sony portable - at least on FM. The digital readout on the analog tuner works great and I am noticing no drift. Just like Kaito, the Chinese produced radios are getting better and better. Mine is replacing an Emerson (who used to have good quality) that has basically fallen apart before my eyes in just two years.

If you want something perfect, pay more money. If you don't get hung up on expecting everything for a low price and you want to save some money and get a decent radio, this is the way to go.

I discovered that

a) the sound quality is poor, even compared to other "cheap" players. I usually can't tell any difference between good and bad players, but even I could hear how tinny the music sounded.

b) any sort of vibration will make the player skip or throw up an error and stop working -- like even heavy walking in the next room sometimes.

c) it lasted just over a year and then it stopped playing CDs (which was what I primarily used it for). My old "cheap" player lasted 8 years before dying, so this was pretty pathetic in comparison.

So unless you only need this for the short term and don't care about sound... AVOID IT. There are much better players out there for the same price.

I bought this cd player to play a white niose cd for my baby. It works just fine for that. However, when playing a music cd the soung quality is not great. But it's about what I expected for the price.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not even worth the low price, March 23, 2007

The sound quality is complete crap. There is absolutely NO bass and when you try to turn up the volume the speakers crackle and cut out. I was excited about this radio because it is mp3 ready and came with the jack to connect my mp3 player. When I connected my mp3 player I was shocked to discover that the sound quality could get even worse than it already was. I actually like the design and I guess since I will be using it in my office at low volume it will serve its purpose, but I still wish I wouldnt have wasted what little money this costs.

I see amazon has since changed the display picture, when i ordered it they had something completly different, cause if i knew it looked like this I would have never bought it. Anyway, the sound quality is bad, it's sounds like an old transistor radio especially when the sound is turned up. I can never get any radio reception on it so I guess it's not good in that regard either. I had to end up giving this to my 3 yr old son to play his cd's and buy a better one, i cause for that price i should not have expected much.

This CD Player arrived today and is going to be a Christmas gift for our daughter. My husband and I looked all over for weeks before we purchased this and we finally settled on this one from Amazon because the reviews for it were better than the ones for the other lower priced units. Well everyone, I decided to review it because of the difficult time that we had finding it! We have had a pretty bad last two years financially so we needed to find something inexpensive that would not only play cd's but would also allow for an MP3 Player to be plugged into it. Our daughter has also looked around for many months but everything was always too expensive or had really bad reviews. I opened this player up and tested it as soon as it arrived. The only bad thing so far is that there is an obvious low hum on the speakers whenever the player is turned on and it does not matter if it is on the radio function, CD or MP3. However, I don't think that this is a real problem because with the volume at a decent low level you don't hear it. I read some reviews about the remote going bad but I didn't try it, mainly because we are not too concerned with it. After Christmas when our daughter opens this up and uses it for a few weeks I will update my review. For now though, I wanted you all to know that if you are cash strapped like we are and need a cd player that will also play from an MP3 Player, then this appears to be a great little system for under $30.00. I didn't even find anything else close to having all of these functions for under $50.00 except for the Coby Brand which we don't trust. I have a good musical ear and would even use this for myself or for a gift for another adult, it is just not professional quality but not 'bad' quality. In other words, if you just want a little stereo to take on a trip or to go from room to room with an audio book than it is great. I prefer a better system when seriously listening to music but I think that you know what I mean, for a desk unit or for use while doing house work it is great. I feel that it is a good value for the price paid. The stereo came with a short sturdy cord for connecting an MP3 Player into it, a remote control and a power cord. One other thing, the stereo was the silver color as pictured even though in the description it says that the color will be black. I didn't care one way or the other but someone else might, so I am letting everyone know.

4.0 out of 5 stars good deal so far..., September 29, 2011

It's hard to find a cd/radio boombox anymore, since everyone now listens to music on an ipod or computer. In my research to purchase a boombox for my toddler to listen to Cds on, I found that my choices seemed to be limited to two categories - 1) sub $50 with mostly crappy reviews (Coby/GPX/other cheap electronics brands I never heard of), and 2) Sony for $70-100+. Brands I have bought over the years (Sanyo,Sharp, Panasonic, Philips, Emerson, Toshiba) no longer make boomboxes (this may be a moot point, since all of these electronics were made by 1-2 companies and sold under the different brand names, but I digress...) I didn't want to spend alot on something that my kid might eventually break, and I wanted something to play cds that I expected to last at least a year or two. My search came down to the $20-$35 Coby models and the $25-$40 GPX models. Given my limited choices, I ended up chosing this GPX player, as reviews for the Coby were overwhelmingly terrible with many reports of the CD player not reading discs/skipping after a very short period of ownership. So far, the GPX CD Player is working well for me and my toddler - It plays all her CDs (homemade burned discs too)and the CD door has withstood her repeated opening and closing. The player does occasionally skip (not due to CD), not often, but it does seem to happen randomly once or twice during a 50 min CD. Sound isn't terrible - very adequate for playing kid's music. This unit has a MP3 player input (input hole into which you plug in an included 3 inch male-to-male 3.5mm cord) that I haven't used yet - Note: if you leave the mp3 cord plugged in, boombox will emit a low hum when turned off (this is remedied if you unplug the 3.5mm cord). The included remote can be used for fastforward, play or stop cds - there is no volume control on the remote (sound must be adjusted manually with dial on side of boombox). Obviously this is not a high quality audio electronic appliance for audiophiles, but I'm happy with this inexpensive purchase so far. It's performing well for my daughter after 10 days, and so far I can reccommend as a cheap boombox for kids, or for using in the background while working.

4.0 out of 5 stars Basic Player, October 26, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: GPX Portable CD Player with AM/FM Radio, Line in for MP3 Devices and Remote Control (Gunmetal Grey) (Electronics)
This is a pretty basic unit. The finish is not wonderful. The remote only works for the CD. There are no presets on the radio. There is a headphone jack and a line in for other devices. My cellphone (Blackberry) plays fine through it. It has a cord for connecting an external device but no headphones. It uses 6 C cells or AC for power and the remote takes two AAA cells. It will work for me since I was wanting an inexpensive unit to tote around and probably get beat up.

I thought at least the cd sound would be balanced. Nope. Very high on treble, and the remote that comes with it, does not adjust volume...just backwards and forwards for song selection. Looks nice...sounds yucky,

I couldn't give a better rating on the battery life as I have mine plugged in. I wanted something in the kitchen so I could play back my mp3 player and this works like a charm. Very glad I purchased it. I would recommend to all my friends.
