More About the Author

Scape Martinez is an accomplished multidisciplinary artist and writer. He was born in Newark, New Jersey, to Puerto Rican immigrant parents. Scape grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, California, and has been involved in graffiti art since the 1980's. Since then he has pushed the boundaries as to what graffiti/street art could be whether that's in fine art, public art, or even in the entrepreneur space.

As a recognized artist, his fine art paintings combine elements of graffiti and abstract expressionism to create large scale, rhythmic and expressive compositions that transcends mere technique.

His first book, "GRAFF: the Art and Technique of Graffiti," is an international bestseller. In 2009 he began public speaking engagements to discuss his unique perspective on art and creativity. His insightful, thought-provoking and highly visual lectures inform, inspire, and motivate both young adults and working professionals alike.

I needed to learn how to draw graffiti for one of my classes. I bought this book and after alot of practice I was decent at it. The book explains where to start, what colors to use, and many other things(for more advanced artists). The book was worth the money.

Just received my copy yesterday and I am blown away with the quality of the art and photos in it! This is an unprecedented manual that really breaks down the art of graffiti to understandable steps. The way cool graphics and eye popping colors make this a must have for all artists and art educators. Mr. Martinez is not only a master technician but an exceptional teacher as well in the way that he explains, technique, materials, styles, the elements of art and, incredibly the HISTORY of graffiti in a very short, sequential page by page format. As an educator I also appreciated his disclaimers about the legal ramifications of "tagging" and how you can turn your graff skills into appropriate and appreciated art.

One of the few book resources for learning anything about the actual techniques and practices of graffiti artists. Combined with a good introduction on the styles and history of graff artwork.

I bought this book for my 11 year old son who was interested in the art of graffiti. He experimented with it a little but after he received the book he was able to do so much more. Although he probably looks at the pictures (which are numerous and varied) more than read the text he has still learned a great deal about the various styles and techniques. I even began to read it and was pleased with the easy to understand language and explanations throughout. It is a great learning tool.

I picked up this book because I have always been a fan of graffiti. I bought Graff and as usual it arrived before the estimated delivery date. The book covers a brief history of graffiti and shows examples from different artists. I really enjoyed the section on lettering and common styles which I was able to apply to my own art. The other section I really enjoyed was the tools section. It covers the "tool kit" that most artists carry and explains the different cases for using them and the different effects you can make. Graff is a great intro to street art and teaches some skills you can take back to your own art work.

I've been doing graffiti for about six years now, and surprisingly enough this book was very motivating and helpful. I never realized how important the use of colors really is. All in all it's a great book and I highly recommend it for any beginner or any experienced artist who'd like a few tips or a little motivation!
