Outside two more men fall to gunshots.

I found the same version of Grand Duel in a 20 western movie box set at Wal-Mart in the 5.00 bin.... The picture quality is also horrible.

This movie was terrible, Lee Van Cleef was the only redeeming feature but he couldn't save it.

Please disregard the negative reviews about the picture quality placed prior to May 2013 as it does not pertain to this particular release by BU. The Blue Underground edition is remastered from the original film negatives and also features a commentary. The film itself is a slightly above average Italian Western released at a time in the early seventies when the genre was succumbing to parody. It doesn't quite reach the heights of films like 'For A Few Dollars More' or 'The Big Gundown' but it is a decent enough entry in the genre itself. Recommended to fans of Lee Van Cleef and Spaghetti Westerns.

Most of these reviews pertain to illegal bootlegs of GRAND DUEL (aka THE BIG SHOWDOWN). This new Blue Underground DVD is officially licensed, and has been fully restored and remastered from the original negative. It is presented fully uncut, in the original widescreen 2.35:1 aspect ratio. As far as Extras, the DVD includes a very informative Audio Commentary with Journalists C. Courtney Joyner and Henry Parke, as well as the Theatrical Trailer and a Spaghetti Western Trailer Reel. GRAND DUEL has never looked or sounded better!

Fans of spaghetti Westerns should be very happy GRAND DUEL has been officialy licenced and re-mastered by BLUE UNDERGROUND. BU takes great pride in their releases and gives every one of them the royal treatment. This DVD is the Real Deal.

The director of this film, Giancarlo Santi, was an assistant director on both The Good, The Bad and The Ugly and Once Upon a Time in the West, so he obviously knows what it takes to make a good Spaghetti Western. When he ventured out on his own he took For a Few Dollars More and Good, Bad, Ugly co-star Lee Van Cleef with him. While it isn't on the level with Leone (but really what is?) the result is a solid 90 minute Spaghetti Western with an unforgettable score (which you may recognize from Kill Bill vol 1). If you are a fan of the sub-genre definitely check this one out, to me the music alone makes the viewing worth it.

This movie was terrible, Lee Van Cleef was the only redeeming feature but he couldn't save it. The circus acrobatics were funny though, the hero shooting villains off roofs then using their falling bodies falling on teter-totters in catapulting escapes. The Grand Duel at the end was a Grand Dud.

An outstanding Italian Western... and I do not know what everyone is complaining about, quite...! The "Grand Duel", made so well in the imitable Italian style, can be seen as a classic, and representative of it. It features a mysterious beginning, and again (as is so often the case) heroes with good and bad moral qualities, innocence, and the importance and sanctity of death. This is right there with all the other great films of the genre, and as a two pack, I recommend with "Death Rides a Horse", or try Van Cleef in the film he did with Sergio Sollima: The Big Gundown. Lee Van Cleef was at his top in the mid 60's to early 1970's, and rather almost plays an iconic western character, possibly even more than Clint Eastwood himself. This was made in 1972, as the days of Italian Westerns were waning, and likewise Van Cleef's days depicting a gunslinger.

Right off the bat, I'm going to say this is the best version of this film available. If you want to see The Grand Duel, get this version. Blue Underground did a beautiful job restoring the print to fully uncut status. That being said, they could have done a better job with the extras. All that's offered is a bunch of trailers for other BU releases and a couple commentaries. This release is about on par with some of their early releases, like Violent City. Maybe I'm just spoiled with their special editions of Django, Zombie, and Suspiria. Either way, even with the dissapointing special features, this still gets 4 stars for being a beautiful restoration!
