More About the Author

I write books for kids. My first novel is called Escape Under the Forever Sky. It's about the 13-year old daughter of the American ambassador to Ethiopia who gets kidnapped and has to find her way to freedom. I've also written a series of dark comic short stories for younger readers, inspired my dark comic dad, called Grandpa Hates the Bird. My latest book is a 17th century seafaring adventure called Cast Off: The Strange Adventures of Petra De Winter and Bram Broen.

As a parent, I would have read this to my boys simply because I saw nothing wrong with it. As a former teacher of small children & librarian storyteller I would not because there are certain terms (hate the bird, kill the bird)parents do not approve of and I do not feel comfortable introducing to other children. That said, if you buy it, pre-read it before introducing it to your child.

nice little short story for kids from the bird's perspective on it's interaction with humans - especially those humans who don't 'get' what the bird thinks. Just a few minutes as a filler of time to read.

The story is not bad, but it's not something I would want my son or daughter to read.. I think it's a bit too young to have them read "kill the bird"..

Bird's family is a little girl, Maya, and her brother, Joseph, and Mother. Once a year the family goes on a trip for a week, leaving Bird with Grandma and Grandpa. Bird is liked, if not loved by all except Grandpa, and this year, Grandma has a trip to take at the same time as Bird's family, so he will be alone with Grandpa. What will happen to Bird?

Very well written, very realistic with accurate bird facts, and EXTREMELY funny! I have not laughed out loud while reading in years, and I repeatedly interrupted my husband's activities to read him the funny parts. I can't wait for the kids to get home so we can read it together.

Spoiler:
I just about lost my marbles with laughter over the playing dead funeral scene, and Father saying, "stop being morbid." Too hilarious!!!

Good writing, not the best plot...a little morbid for kids. My 8 year old enjoyed it, but my younger kids didn't.

My young daughter enjoyed me reading this as a bedtime story. It was humorous. Of course I had to read it in a parrot voice, but it was fun and a great story to tell to your child. I originally put four stars because I feel like it just ended abruptly, but as I wrote this review, my daughter kept telling me to mark the other star so I did. She totally enjoyed it.

Primitive and not very engaging for a start if a book series. The parrot character is great but there is really one story line "the battle". Needs some more for a general series plot.
