4.0 out of 5 stars Works for me, July 20, 2007
This review is from: GRANDTEC MAG-4000 Magic Guard III Color Quad Processor (Personal Computers)
I was very skeptical about MAG-4000. My biggest concern was that it doesn't have motion detection capability. You can read about SENSITIVITY, but there is nothing about motion detection. I was afraid I have to use cameras with detectors or separate detectors. I was wrong. "Sensitivity" is what Grandtec calls build-in motion detection.
So far I like the unit. It outputs good picture to a regular PC monitor via VGA. I only had to move the picture all the way to the left in monitor settings since unit's output wasn't centered. Motion detection works good at max level (7). Power supply is 12V, it runs cold. Unit gets hot, but not extremely. Still, I'd like it to be made of metal and have better air circulation. It has a list of recorded events, so you can see if camera was triggered when you were out. Quad works good and remote is OK, but should be pointed to the unit and the range is not great. There are also two RCA outputs I use for Tivo Series 1 live recording, and for Slingbox to check the cameras remotely (Slingbox also uploads image to NAS). It works for me. I've assembled my security system using different units and you may do better by using standalone, but my setup also has pluses. I hanged a small old PC LCD monitor near entry door, so I can see my visitor when turn it on (it takes 2 sec to warm up).
I had a situation when after using Freeze unit didn't respond to any commands, but I don't use that function so I don't care about it too much.
I can't predict life of the unit, but for right now it does good job.
