Questions are poorly written, text is rife with errors.

It is extremely hard to take a test when you do not know what the question is asking or if the answers they have down are what they really meant to write.
Ms. L
This is not even my opinion on the book, this is just the sad state of its editing.

For those of you who will only read one line of this review, let it be this: DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, BUY THIS BOOK.

I began preparing for my November chem GRE in August. Due to an unfortunate lack of quantity in materials released by ETS for testing, I decided to buy an alternative study guide - this book. After working through the ETS practice test so many times I memorized every question, I started applying myself to the tests in this book sometime around mid-September.

There are five tests total. The CD is a gyp - the two tests on the CD are the same as the ones on paper, despite their attempts to insinuate you are getting fresh testing material. The first thing that struck me is the sheer volume of editing problems, starting with the first test and proceeding all the way through the end. Pentavalent carbon is not an uncommon sight. The book cannot figure out the difference between "all of the above" and "none of the above". Whoever wrote the answer keys and whoever wrote the questions clearly did their respective work without ever contacting each other or reading the other's section. There are so many flaws that I frequently found myself "throwing away" questions because not only did the nature of the question confuse the subject matter, the answer itself was so obviously flawed there is no way to "learn" from the example. This is not even my opinion on the book, this is just the sad state of its editing. The idea that this is a "4th edition" makes one wonder what the first draft looks like, since apparently no editor has ever gone past the first page of this debacle.

So I obsessively worked through all five tests for two months, to the extent that of the 600+ questions in the book I comfortably memorized at least 500 of them.

I was really happy when I saw that a 2010 Chemistry GRE book was published, but not until I received it and started working on practice tests did I realize what a complete waste of my money it was. The authors did not bother to edit the questions and answers before they rushed to print the "manuscript". Even a high-school student could have done a better job. Some of the problems are correct conceptually, but they are so badly written, with so many deceiving mistakes that I got the impression that I was grading someone's homework, not preparing for a standardized exam. I have to add that I did very well in all my Chemistry classes (straight A+s) and that I can tell when a problem is written poorly and when I do not know the answer. I DO NOT recommend buying this book.

I bought this book because I liked the idea of having 5 practice tests to prepare for the chemistry GRE, but the questions are riddled with terrible errors! There are questions where the answer corresponds to the opposite question asked, structures with carbon bonded to 5 atoms, and worse! On the plus side, after reviewing why I got problems wrong while practicing and realizing that most were typos, it was a nice confidence boost.

This book is poorly edited, there are numerous errors and typos in the book. There are double negatives through out the book, so it is extreme confusing what the question is asking for. Sometimes there are weird notations that I never encounter before, like O-H...Cl. Some weird compound is expected to know, like Catechol (whatever that is). There are a lot of missing symbols, like arrow head for chemical reactions, +/- or = and < signs got mixed up and upper cases and lower cases. What stresses me the most is the that the Organic Chem reaction questions do not list all the reagents that are needed to produce the product from the reactant. For example, in order to add nitro group on to benzene, the reagents are HNO3 and H2SO4, but the book simple use HNO3. I bought this book because this is the only resource that I can find to study for the Chem GRE. what a wast of money.

Don't buy this book.

I can't recommend this book. Each practice test has problems that are completely unsolvable - meaning none of the answers given are correct. Very frustrating, especially when some of the questions are quite simple! Are these guys smoking crack or what?
