This is an excellent addition to the arsenal of any student preparing for the GRE! I recommend this book, but I would encourage the readers to consider the other resources available, including the ETS Official Study Guide (available through Amazon). I had both of these books side-by-side for this review and my best recommendation is to use BOTH to prepare. The software with this GRE for Dummies book contains a whopping 5 practice exams, compared to the ETS Official Guide's measly two exams. Why not go with both and have 7 practice exams on which to cut your teeth and hone your skills? The key is to remember that no one book or practice exam will prepare you for this exam. Use the recommendations in this and other books, study the exam and the scoring, and practice, practice, practice in as realistic an environment as you can create. This book will help if you really USE IT!

The GRE for Dummies book is broken into 6 parts:
- Mastering the Test Taking Experience (note: basic test skills and tips - sleep, eat, practice, relax, etc...)
- Tacking the Verbal Section One Word at a Time
- High School Math and Beyond: Math You Thought You'd Never Need Again
- Penning Powerful Analytical Essays
- Taking Full-Length Practice GREs: It's All You (note: this is a good section on how to drill yourself in practice - some real nuggets here)
- The Part of Tens (ten key facts about the GRE, ten mistakes you won't make, and ten ways to warm up and relax during the GRE).

Also, the CD-ROM which accompanies the book is excellent. I found the flashcards for vocabulary and the practice questions especially nice and easy to use.

Here's the rest of the skinny on the CD:
412 vocabulary flashcards which can be viewed onscreen (click a button to view definition), in order 1-412, or in random order to test your skills.
5 practice exams which can be used in either a timed or untimed format.
CON: There is no on-screen calculator like the actual exam.

Here are the system requirements for the CD-ROM to see if your system will run the software according to the publishers:
-A PC with a Pentium or faster processor or a Mac OS computer with a 68040 or faster processor
-Microsoft Windows 98 or later; or Mac OS system software 7.6.1 or later (Note: I used Windows 7 without any problems)
-At least 32MB of total RAM installed on your computer
-A CD-ROM drive
-A sound card for PCs; Mac OS computers have built-in sound support
-A monitor capable of displaying at least 256 colors or grayscale
-A modem with a speed of at least 14,400 bps

I am an ICU nurse who is heading back to school for my masters degree. I had been out of school for many years before going back 6 years ago - earning a 4.0 GPA on my BSN. Regardless of those good grades, many of the topics on the GRE are very distant memories!

I have several other GRE books - Barrons, ETS, and one from Kaplan. By far I prefer this book because the writing is very straight forward and you are not left to fill in the blanks on your own, so to speak.

VERBAL:
The verbal section breaks down exactly how to deal with all the GRE question formats and has clear, short definitions for the most commonly-seen vocab on the GRE. I like the short definitions as they are easier to internalize. The book also focuses on familiarization of the question types and answer choices to give the test taker more time on the actual exam.

MATH:
The math section is fairly comprehensive and helped me dust off my old algebra/geometry skills dealing with square roots, factoring, angles, etc. The math section should be tackled in order though - if you skip forward, some crucial steps are not broken down because those areas were already covered in earlier sections. Again, a focus on familiarization is present and I can see how it would be beneficial... no surprises!

ESSAY:
There are essay pointers, breakdowns, and examples to follow in order to sharpen your skills for a better score. Truly I think the key to this is repetition which the book strongly encourages. Their are examples shown that have earned different scores so you can identify the ballpark your writing skill level will earn.

As stated, this book is my favorite. I keep going back to it while the other ones are getting dusty on my shelf. The only thing I am using as a complement is Barron's GRE Verbal Workbook which has "more than 380 example questions" - I know I need practice for the verbal stuff to sink in. The GRE for Dummies book has practice questions, as well as practice exams, but I would like to use those as a final wrap-up test of my knowledge instead of as the workhorse for learning this part.

Bottom line: highly recommend!

"GRE for Dummies" reminds me of the SAT prep books we all used to get better scores on our SAT's. It contains the short practice tests after each of the sections and gives a good overview of what to expect, however, that is only the beginnig. Throughout the book there are hints and tips, important things to remember, information on how to decide on answers, what not to do, and even how to relax and calm down on test day so that you can test better.

One huge benefit to "GRE for Dummies" is the CD that is included in the back of the book. It contains FIVE practice tests and 400 interactive vocabulary flash cards. This CD alone will be a tremendous help to prepare for the GRE and the book is just an added bonus!

Highly recommended!
