2.0 out of 5 stars All I do is talk to my pillow., September 18, 2007

This review is from: The GREAT SCREEN LOVERS Collection (Audio CD)
This is a collection of songs sung by male "great screen lovers" of the past. I never really thought of Jack Nicholson and Mickey Rooney as romantic leading men, but no big deal. This is really a collection of rare songs by male movie stars. Most of these recordings seem to be taped directly from old movies, so the recording quality isn't that great. Most of these actors aren't really known for their singing, and with good reason, judging by the aural evidence here. Some of these guys can't carry a tune at all. But there is one real gem here, which is the theme song from Pillow Talk, by the film's star, Rock Hudson. Rock doesn't sing this song as well as his co-star Doris Day did, but he does have a decent voice. And I really get a kick out of hearing him sing about talking to his pillow about finding his dream girl (I don't think he ever did find her). The second most interesting recording is from the movie Guys and Dolls, which is a duet of "A Woman in Love" by Marlon Brando and Jean Simmons. Nice to have it, but it would have been better to have Brando's performance of "Luck Be a Lady" from that same film (I actually imitate Brando when I sing that song). Most of the other songs here aren't that interesting, although it's somewhat intriguing to hear silent movie star Rudolph Valentino singing, but the song itself isn't memorable. I should mention that there are a handful of great singers here, in lesser recordings, including Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire and Rudy Vallee (hey, I imitate him, too). Here is the complete track listing:

1. Who is There Among Us Who Knows - Jack Nicholson
2. Chattanooga Choo Choo - Tyrone Power
3. Manhattan - Mickey Rooney
4. Foolish Pride - Robert Mitchum
5. Putting on the Ritz - Clark Gable
6. Day After Day - James Stewart
7. Did I Remember - Cary Grant
8. Kashimiri Love Song - Rudolph Valentino
9. Pillow Talk - Rock Hudson
10. A Woman in Love - Marlon Brando & Jean Simmons
11. Chico's Choo Choo - Robert Wagner & Debbie Reynolds
12. Lover Come Back to Me - Rudy Vallee
13. All I Do is Dream of You - Gene Kelly
14. Got a Brand New Suit - Fred Astaire & Nanette Fabray
