From School Library Journal
Grade 2-4-- Emily Normal has just moved from Plainville to Transylvania, USA, to live with her Great-Uncle Dracula, and she is worried about not fitting in with her third-grade class. Although she has some difficult times (such as adjusting to scream cheese and jelly sandwiches, spider webs in the lunchroom, stink bug pets, Putrid Perfume, and a young wicked witch, she is finally accepted when she wins the Gross Face Contest. One or two of Carter's black-and-white pencil cartoon illustrations accompany each chapter and complement the mood of the text. Although Harvey's story is almost absurd, it will appeal to children who constantly deal with peer-group relationships and worry about acceptance. --Gale W. Sherman, Pocatello Public Library, ID
