***** 5 Stars with no reservations, for this OUTSTANDING FCC Exam Prep-Study Guide for the General Radio Operator License Exam. It includes ALL the Question Pools for Elements 1,3 & 8. (Basic & intermediate level Electronics; Radar Repair & Required knowledge of the FCC Maritime & Aviation Radio regulations) The book not only supplies the answers to every question, it goes a step further and explains the reason for why the answer given is the correct one. Sometimes, these explanations are just a paragraph, other times they can be quite extensive and detailed. The Book also supplies a lot of useful supplementary information for those who are interested in a career as a Marine or Aviation Technician. Included in the package are two CD-ROMS. One CD covers the relevant CFR (Code of Federal Regulations) as they pertain to Radio Repair & Operation in the Marine & Aviation Fields. The second CD-Rom contains FCC GROL practice exams, with special features, such as the software can tell what areas you are weak in and therefore need more study time on. Overall, I have to say that Gordon West & the W5YI Group really produced a great product here, and it was well worth the price, of $79.95. (HINT): You generally "Get what you pay for". Peace ;-)

I just finished taking Elements 1, 3, and 8 of the FCC EXAM and passing them. I used this book and the accompanying software to study for the exam. This book won't teach you the theory behind the questions. You still need to know electronics and radio theory. But the book and software are good practical guides. A brief explanation of the correct answer for each and every test question possible is included in the text which helps speed studying because you don't have to consult numerous tomes of electronics texts to refresh your memory on little used calculations, formulas etc. The accompanying software and practice exam program makes studying an interactive process and aids study by showing weak areas where more study is needed.

This book has all the information needed take the exams and file applications for a commercial license.

A final word of caution: This book should be used exactly for what it is intended. It is not an electronics theory book. It is intended specifically for preparing to take the FCC Commercial License exams element 1, 3, and 8.

I acquired my GROL 17 years ago and I just wanted to add the RADAR endorsement. This book was excellent in explaining the theory and questions on the FCC element 8 exam. I used the software to study for the exam and review the material. I passed the RADAR endorsement the first time. I recommend this book highly to anyone who has experience and needs to pass the GROL w/RADAR.

I had to get this book for college and i already have ham radio license, and the general radio telephone operator, GROL, has 600 questions in the pool, so would be hard to memorize, module one, the laws is easy and basic, for me, the radar part is an interest and in the working world makes you open for alot more jobs. The book covers all 3 of those subjects which are Fcc the general radio (GROL), element 1, element 3, and element 8 (Radar). If you are looking at this book, the new books have one for twenty bucks more and it has the practice exam CD in it. It is a very small program and I passed all my testing so far by just going through the book for explanations i didnt understand and then the practice Cd, which you can take any part of the elements and any subpart, and see which areas you are week. It is just how i learn, repetive, and it was priceless for me, passed everything by just doing what i mentioned. Very much recommend, and especially with the CD, practice tests, it is worth it, to me the CD is worth more than the book. Dont hesitate, CD!!

I passed my GROL test (elements 1 & 3) earlier today + ship radar endorsement (element 8). I got a 100 on each of the three tests.
The combination of Gordon West's book & test practice software did the trick and made the exam preparation a snap.
I've wanted a commercial FCC license since I was a kid, and this book & software gave me the impetus to complete this unfinished business.
The book and software are really useful study materials.

The book arrived promptly and in good shape. I like the book and the software that comes with the book is excellent. I have done some drills on Elements 1 and 3, and I like drill and the explanations of the answers. Most of the drill software provides no explanations.

This is a "good" study manual. It gives good background and surprising information that is otherwise hard to obtain including information not direftly related ot this study, such as the US Coast Guard does not recognize passing certain of these tests! The topic itself is very rare so it stands out if you ever want to study and pass this test but are not an electronics engineer. That said, a lot of the questions could use more expounding upon for their answers. No regrets, but it could use more explanation for a plethora of the answers.

This is a good book and got me to pass the FCC with a very good score. The explanations are simple and if you study it it will get you to pass the FCC. I do however found the book a little boring since it contain a lot of information that is not necessary such as history and long explanation of systems. This book would be better if it was made more simple and presented only the information need such as formulas, you should already have a basics on electronics and at least have taken some classes before you attempt to get your FCC licence either way.
