Security and Peace of Mind

Have you ever lost your phone? Or forgotten your Android tablet on the bus? If you have, then you know what a stressful experience that can be. On top of having to replace the device, you have to worry about someone finding all your personal information. Enter Seek Droid. It is designed to give you peace of mind by helping you track down your device if it gets lost or stolen.

Installation is easy. It installs itself as an administrator on the device, enabling you to manage your device remotely. Once you have installed Seek Droid, you can locate your device, remotely lock it, see all the recent calls since you misplaced it, and even wipe the device with little effort.

Simplicity of Design

Seek Droid is a very simple, yet functional app. The beauty of Seek Droid's design is that it takes up little room on your device. The bulk of the functionality comes from Seek Droid's website. From the website, you can locate your device on a map. You can also see the most recent phone calls made on the device, so you can check whether or not your device has been used to call Tasmania. But the best feature of the app is the Alarm feature. The alarm can send a message to the screen of your device telling the "new owner" that this device belongs to someone else. You also have the option of sending a loud and irritating alarm sound.

Battery Hogs Not Welcome

There are quite a few mobile security apps on the market, but what makes Seek Droid different is that doesn't keep scanning on your device. This means that the app isn't always running in the background, hogging your battery. It just does what you want it to: locate your missing device. Go check it out, you can't afford not to.

Note: to uninstall SeekDroid, go to Android Settings > Location & Security > Select Device Administrators and uncheck SeekDroid if it exists. Now navigate to Android Settings > Applications > Manage applications > All and click on SeekDroid > Uninstall.

4.0 out of 5 stars Love the Lock and Wipe Options March 23, 2011
Verified Purchase
Edit 10/29/2012:
SeekDroid has switched to a paid model for some of the features including Breadcrumb and Fences. For this reason, I have removed one star.

Original review below:

SeekDroid is EXACTLY what I was looking for in a security product if I ever lost my Droid X. I looked at competitor's software, but they all wanted a monthly subscription to provide equal or inferior service. I love being able to see the last 10 phone calls as well as locking the phone remotely, and I especially love the fact that I can wipe both the phone and the Micro SD card. All of these other functions are located at the SeekDroid Web site.

- One-time fee (no monthly subscription)
- Ability to view last 10 phone calls
- Ability to wipe the phone (and/or SD card) remotely
- Ability to hide the software as it runs on the phone
- Ability to view location of the phone via GPS functionality
- Ability to send an alert with a custom alarm message to the phone (helpful to locate a missing phone)

- None

Parents, if you need to know the location of your child this app will help you do so. And if you are like me and tend to forget where you placed the phone recently, then the alert is an extra bonus!

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than Wavesecure!!! March 22, 2011
This app is superior to McAfee's wavesecure in that you do NOT have to go through the trouble of rooting your phone in order to allow REMOTE enabling of your GPS to accurately find your phone.

For Wavesecure to be useful the GPS needs to already be turned on on your phone (unless you're a root user which I am not). Also being able to retrieve the last 10 or so incoming/outgoing phone calls remotely is a pretty powerful feature to be able to have.

The program also does remote locking well.

I just wish the "Alarm" notification where it states "Please help me find my owner" would stay on longer than one beep while my phone is on it's lock screen. I noticed if my phone is unlocked and I send the alarm notification the alarm continues like it's supposed to.

Oh and to "hide" the app on your phone you have to enable that remotely from the website then reboot your phone.

Don't tell anyone but I would pay more for this. It has exactly what I am looking for; Peace of mind.

I've had and still have the "Where's my Droid" application on the phone even though I use SeekDroid because if the bad guy gets my phone when I am unaware he may find the "Where's my Droid" application, think he is the smart guy and delete it before I have a chance to alert or locate my phone. However because I can hide the SeekDroid application once installed the joke will be on the bad guy. When the time comes that I know my phone is missing I can use the website and to locate the general area that the phone is at and then I can send the alarm when I would be within earshot of the device. Soon I will find both my phone and the culprit. The alarm feature is good if I am the culprit and careless enough to misplace my phone somewhere nearby. If the possessor is a decent person I can send a message on how to reach me for a fair reward all the while the phone is locked and useless to someone that may attempt to use it.

If someone did get a chance to use it before I locked or located it I can also find the last 10 calls that were made on it as well. Fear not as the unrelated "Horizon" application will still assist the owner of the phone as SeekDroid will not access that information.

The wipe and lock features prove that the application was well thought out and intelligently designed. I love how unlike "Where's my Droid" the possessor has no idea that any of this information is being communicated.

The only "CON" I can think of is the lack of the SMS option as one may not always have access to the internet once the phone is considered lost. Just about everyone has a mobile phone so to have the the ability to grab any phone and send an SMS to your own phone and use many of the features that SeekDroid has would be icing on the cake. I hope this is a future "Pro" feature to come as it would be worth an extra cost if implemented.

5.0 out of 5 stars SeekDroid vs Lookout Lite: Not A Prize Fight! July 6, 2011
Verified Purchase
I've been using Lookout mobile security software for a long while now. I had it on my Blackberry Curve 8330 & it has been running on my Samsung Epic 4G since day 1 I got it. I have a separate review about both of my Epic 4G & my Lookout. I've recently spotted SeekDroid Free on Amazon Appstore for Android (Two-Day Promo offer) & decided to add it up to my arsenal. I have to admit, I was first impressed by the amount of favorable reviews SeekDroid has driven from its customers. I figured SeekDroid must have done something right! It turns out, they actually did!

Now let's see what both of our contestants have to offer & how much they got it for?!

Lookout is primarily a Security software. It protects your mobile phone from viruses, malware, spyware & phishing attempts. It's always ON & it works quietly & effectively in the background. It scans each app you download to your smartphone & alerts you immediately should anything harmful is detected. That's a peace of mind. That's what it does as it Primary job & for Lookout, it is a job well done.
However, Lookout offers some very useful extras: Find My Phone service & Backup and Restore option. Both are very handy and to some, they are essential. If you factor that both services are offered FREE of charge to all customers with their Lite version, it only fair to say Lookout offering is hard to beat.
The "Find My Phone"/ Missing Device option gives the user two options: You first need to log in to your Lookoutout Account and from there you can: Locate ("Pinpoint") your device on a map. Lookout will remotely activate the GPS on your device along with using cell signal triangulation which will enhance your chances of locating your missing phone.
