Guilty or Else, effectively mixes hardboiled action with humor in a fun read for fans of Southern California crime fiction.  Cop-turned-lawyer Jimmy O'Brien wisecracks his way through political intrigue and gang warfare. Jimmy is dedicated to protecting the innocent by whatever means necessary.

5.0 out of 5 stars terrific historical legal Noir May 21, 2009
Format:Paperback
In 1972 Downy, California, Judge Johnson gives the case to his former junior LAPD partner, thirty-four years old new lawyer Jimmy with the admonition "Get your client to plead guilty, or else!". His client Mexican gardener Ernesto Rodriguez refuses to plea bargain as he insists he is innocent in the violent murder of twenty-seven year old Gloria Graham, assistant to charismatic State Senator Berry Welch. The case is a sure shot for the prosecution as the evidence starting with the bloody knife and blood in his truck overwhelms anything the defense has. Jimmy pleads with Ernesto that he could get twenty five if he accepts a guilty plea or life if not. Ernesto says his kids will know he is innocent and that will be his plea.

The case makes no sense to Jimmy as the cops caught Ernesto instantly, why would the judge and DA push a plea bargain conviction with the evidence they have and why are two goons following him. Only Deputy DA Roberta Allen, who is running the prosecution case, seems honest as she wants justice to prevail, but she believes Ernesto killed the victim. Jimmy's defense gets off the ground because his friend investigator Sol Silverman helps him for a $1 fee starting with learning that Welch and Graham had a hot affair. Jimmy wonders if Welch who refuses to speak to him is the reason for the lighting quick reaction by the State as he is a rising superstar. Jimmy will learn the answers lies in the garbage of politicians owned by the Mob.

GUILTY OR ELSE is a terrific historical legal Noir starring a strong cast who bring to life how powerful the Mob was controlling much of Southern California.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Terrific Read June 15, 2009
Format:Paperback
Jeff Sherratt hits another homerun with GUILTY OR ELSE. I really like his main character, Jimmy O'Brien. He's not your stereotypical thriller hero. He makes mistakes which makes him human and more compelling. Jimmy O knows there's something seriously fishy with pinning the murder on a gardener (with no concrete motive) he just has to prove the man's innocence.

But things soon spiral out of control when bigger players enter the picture, players who don't take prisoners. Politics. The mob. A prosecutor with secrets to protect. It's all woven together with color and style into a compelling mystery with a great ending.

If you like Ray Chandler, you're going to love Jeff Sherratt as well!

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoy or else March 24, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Ex-cop now new lawyer Jimmy O'Brien is personally asked by a former friend Judge Johnson to represent the Hispanic gardener of a beautiful murder victim who happens to be a Senator's secretary. There's one catch: He has to plea him out, guilty no trial. Something doesn't fit in Jimmy's mind. There are more questions than answers. Plus, Ernesto unequivocally professes his innocence. There's a Senator, a D.A., a Mob Boss, and of course the Judge who all played a pivotal role in this young woman's life. But what is the connection. Sherratt weaves a compelling story with mystery, action and drama. Jimmy is not a hero per se, he has faults like the rest of us. I like that about him. The storyline is tight. The characters well thought out. The setting is familiar. This may have been a 5 star for me but for the occasional word order/grammar/conversion problems that just might be because of the Kindle version. Get over that part and enjoy ~!~

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific December 3, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I thoroughly enjoyed Guilty or Else. I had read The Brimstone Murders first (a mistake - if you're going to read both of these Jimmy O'Brien books, start with this one) and enjoyed it, but this one was better for me. I liked both the major and minor characters, the plot held together and was fast-paced, and the ending was satisfying. I heartily recommend this book.

Jimmy O'Brien is a lovable, relatable character who sometimes makes unwise decisions that get him into situations that keep us on the edge of our seats. A real page turner.
