Book Description

“It's hard to take on your heroes. There's a certain feeling of betrayal that goes with the undertaking; even if you succeed in besting them, the end-result is not what one might call exhilarating...”

And so begins Guns: The Real Shake, the new Kindle release by David Hearn available exclusively through Amazon. Hearn, a self-admitted lifelong fan of King's work, nevertheless takes the undisputed master of horror Stephen King head-on in a duel of gunslinging bullets needed here, though—just the facts will do.

In January of this year, King released his essay "Guns" as an Amazon Kindle Single. As with virtually all of King's works, it rose quickly to the top of the bestseller chart. But how much of King's emotional plea on the current gun debate is based on “truth”, and how much of it is typical, fantastical King fiction?

Hearn explores the underlying basis of King's impassioned argument, where he counters that it's nothing new, what King is saying, but simply more of the same anti-gun activist rhetoric that we've been hearing all along. Guns: The Real Shake, however, is not only a direct, unflinching reply to King's essay; it also explores some of the deeper issues and concerns of the nation's current gun control debate, tackles myths and misconceptions on such issues as gun violence and the NRA, and last—but certainly not least—Guns: The Real Shake examines some of the very scary—albeit very real—implications as to some of our current politicians, judges and legislators, their personal agendas, and how their actions might very well hold chilling consequences for our future Second Amendment freedoms.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Guns" gave me a Shake! March 18, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
When I read David Hearn's really brought home how fragile our liberties are...Scary... Scarier than anything Stephen King ever wrote...I am horrified at the random mass killings that we, as a nation, have seen over the last few decades. I would love for all the automatic weapons to be out of reach of the "crazies." But the author opened my eyes to the potential dangers of such legislation. We think we are safe in the US because we have never known another life. This book is a must read for everyone!!

For a young man to take on a seasoned author like David has takes some courage. However, when you are as sharp and able to sift the facts from the media's hype as was done in this magnificent rebuttal to the second amendment enemies it tends to give courage where so many other writers and reporters just rehash the lies and misconceptions and think they are doing the public a service. Don't let up David. I look forward to your next book. How about taking on the politicians next! -RWH

Basic information. Nothing that hasn't been mentioned by many others. I like books like this usually, but this one was a yawner from the start.

More About the Author

David Hearn has been writing sporadically over a span of several decades.

In 1987, at the age of seventeen, he placed second in the Wordsmith fiction competition at (then) Memphis State University with a science fiction short story called "Galaxy Press". The following year he managed to win first place in the Wordsmith fiction division with a rather controversial story (mixing the always fun and wholesome subjects of porn, lycanthropy and snuff films) titled "Obsession."

In 1991, Hearn moved to Athens, Georgia, where he worked several years for a county newspaper as a staff writer and photographer. He later attended both Truett-McConnel College and the University of Georgia, where he studied English and Literature, and Business.

Hearn tried his hand at screenplay writing in the late 1990's. He acquired an agent based in Los Angeles, who shopped around several scripts--but alas, no sale. Unwilling to relocate to LA to pursue the craft, he eventually bowed out of writing altogether for a time, working in other various lines of employment.

It was until 2010 that Hearn again seriously returned to writing, this time concentrating on short fiction, which has appeared in various horror anthologies. In March, 2013, Hearn published Guns: The Real Shake, a non-fiction retort to Stephen King's essay "Guns", as well as an examination of the current US gun control debate.

He's presently at work on the "Darker Series" a large collection of horror short stories and novellas, of which the first volume will be available May, 2013 on Amazon.

Hearn currently lives and works in Pensacola, Florida.
