Book Description

April 13, 2007 1585622168 978-1585622160 4
A staple of psychiatric practice through three editions, Gabbard's Treatments of Psychiatric Disorders has been thoroughly revised to reflect modern clinical expertise in a more accessible volume. More than 160 authorities share insights gained from firsthand experience in a state-of-the-art text that covers all major treatments in psychiatry linked to specific disorders, with a pluralistic approach that includes all major treatment modalities without focusing exclusively on favorite approaches. Not only has each chapter been completely updated, the text has been reorganized to facilitate its publication in a single volume that cuts directly to the heart of disorder-based treatments.

Scrupulously reviewed to consolidate treatment information most needed by readers, the book is organized along the lines of DSM-IV-TR to cover the entire spectrum of conditions, from cognitive, psychotic, and mood disorders to eating disorders, sleep disorders, and disorders of impulse control. This new edition features more extensive coverage of dementia, reorganized material on substance abuse disorders, the latest research on schizophrenia, and recent advances in the understanding of personality disorders. It is an essential touchstone for practitioners and an outstanding reference for students in the mental health professions--and is now an even more useful clinical tool.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Deliberate Turn of Events, November 18, 2009

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Gabbard's Treatments of Psychiatric Disorders, Fourth Edition (Hardcover)
I am writing this review as a clinical psychiatrist who has been practicing for the past 20 years and who owns all three previous editions of this text. To me, the current edition appears to have changed significantly. The information content seems less. I would refer any interested reader to the coverage on delirium in the text and how it differs from the coverage in a previous edition. As an example, the Third Edition included an accompanying chapter entitled "Substance Induced Delirium and Related Encephalopathies" by Brown. That was an outstanding chapter with regard to current theories of delirium and how it related to clinical psychiatry. I can find no equivalent chapter in the newer edition.

The aesthetics of the current volume are not as good as the previous volume. The text is written in two columns per page in what appears to be a larger font. The numbers of references at the end of chapters are variable. The text is limited to one volume rather than two. This was apparently a conscious decision by the editors as discussed in their introduction to the Fourth Edition.

That is a decision that I disagree with. I preferred the more information intense approach in the previous editions and therefore am less enthusistic about this one. If you purchased the previous edition and found it to contain too much the current text may be the right one for you.
