Book Description

GABRIEL: ZERO POINT
A Gabriel Universe Novella

Evan Gabriel wasn't always a feared and respected North American Federation Navy Commander. Before dangerous missions to the ice-bound planet of Poliahu, the deadly jungle world of Eden, and politically corrupt Mars, he was a simple recruit, fighting to make his mark in the elite Naval Special Forces...and was part of a top-secret military experiment that would change his life forever.

Zero Point tells the tale of a young man faced with difficult choices and dangerous trials. Fans of the series will see part of the mysterious past Evan Gabriel carries with him, while readers new to the series get a preview of what is to come in a military man's haunted life.

Zero Point is the true beginning of Evan Gabriel, and his story is just getting started.

Also available: Gabriel's Redemption (Book 1), Gabriel's Return (Book 2), Gabriel's Revenge (Book 3), Gabriel's Journey (complete collection)

~Note: This is a novella of approximately 22,000 words (~90 printed pages) and can be read either before the trilogy or after. Includes excerpts from all three Gabriel books (not included in word count).

WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING ABOUT THE GABRIEL TRILOGY
~" Umstead can write an action-packed adventure story better than most. He is an artist in designing a high-tech battlefield and weaving in the human element with his character's depth and color. If you like action in a science fiction setting then you really need to pick this up from book one and give it a shot." - Tom Clementson, The Kindle Book Review
~ "If John Scalzi and Tom Clancy got combined in a transporter accident a la The Fly....and I mean that in a good way."
~ "This series brings me back to the old days when Sci-Fi was about ass kicking, great friends, loyalty and action."
~ "Umstead has a way of putting you right into the scene, whether it be on a Jamaican beach, a rundown apartment or the icy surface of a distant planet."
~ "Character-rich story, non-stop adventure (think Jason Bourne travels the stars). Completely immersive read."
~"...the military fiction of Tom Clancy, the hardware of Heinlein's Starship Troopers, and the intrigue of Dan Brown."
~ "The detail of the world-building pulled me in and made everything utterly believable."
~ "Well-thought-out universe with a tightly woven history, timeline, and culture."
~ "The author's imagination is amazing...he has knowledge of combat tactics, both with squads and hand-to-hand."
~ "Umstead's writing is solid, as good as it gets, not only in the genre, but in general."
~ "Umstead deals with issues like honor, responsibility and human nature. While deep in thematic content the forward thrust of the story never stops."

Well I love this book, now I have yet another series to finish - Great book, can't wait to get into the rest of the series!

This one ranks up with Dave Duncan or Steve Burst, it's unique and a treat for your mind to wonder away from the stress of the world. Hope you give him a chance too - You'll be surpriced!

ok, first, I am not related to nor do I get any compensation for this.
this is INCREDIBLE, the is superb all by itself. ...I am reading the trilogy of Evan Gabriel and this author is up in my top 5! ...
If you like military, sci fi, great characters, action, great writing this is absolutely a must.
I don't think I could say too much so I will stop here as my opinion is clear already.
Once done with the other 3 I might come in and edit this but it can only be more enthusiastic comments. Finding Mr Umstead (and T.R.Harris the Human Chronicles) have been the best discoveries I've made for a few years.
Beware, do not start this until you have time to finish it. It's almost impossible to put down and I aint kiddin'

5.0 out of 5 stars Pitch-perfect duet of plot and character development October 11, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I've noticed a lot of authors are taking hints from drug pushers lately, providing the first novel in a series for free to get us, the reader, hooked on their work.

It works, too.

I began following on Twitter another author who used this tactic and ended up being introduced to Umstead's work through another writer. Steve was Tweeting you could grab this novella for free, so I jumped.

I'm so glad I did. I literally read this in an evening and didn't put it down until I was done. I'm excited to learn the rest of Evan Gabriel's story now. Umstead takes some tech ideas people have percolating in labs today and turns them into reality. Some of them reminded me of Ian Douglas's "Legacy" trilogy, but I feel like Umstead made a better go of it, with the software updates and that, in his world, this comes about a few thousand years sooner than in Douglas's. Anyway, Umstead provides a pitch-perfect duet of plot and character development in "Zero Point," and you will be doing yourself a favor to check it out. Jedi may not crave action, adventure, and excitement, but readers do and "Zero Point" offers it in spades!

5.0 out of 5 stars Really nice entry point to the series! October 11, 2012

Heya folks!

First off, I must say that I had been suggested by Amazon to check out the rest of the Gabriel series for some time now. I put them into my "Check out later" list. Fast forward a few months, and Mr. Umstead had added me on Twitter via a good friend that subscribed to his link. My friend had urged me to check out Mr. Umstead's Gabriel series. He had let me know that he had a free novella available as a "taste of the goods", so to speak.

I'm glad I did. This is a really well written novella. It actually reminds me a lot of the old "Cobra" series written by Timothy Zahn, but of course there are differences. Mr. Umstead makes good use of current and near future advances in technology to plot out where humanity could be in the future in terms of technology. I particularly liked the idea of the "software" packages that humans are by-then using to enhance their senses and it makes perfect sense.

The actual story is tightly written and the descriptions of places, people, and things are decently done without getting too detailed. They're enough to keep the plot moving forward. The actual writing itself is quite good, and I do like the style. Maybe the only thing I wish would have been slightly better would be perhaps a slightly more detailed physical description of the characters. For example, there is a doctor later on that Gabriel meets, but I just finished this novella just a few hours ago and her physical appearance is still kind of a blank to me. Then again, I'm not even sure if the doc is a throwaway character or not, so that remains to be seen.

With the current price of free in the Amazon market, and if you got a bit of time to burn and you like action/adventure stuff (In space!), pick this up.

4.0 out of 5 stars I'm hooked plain and simple June 1, 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Gabriel:Zero Point is a prequel novella to the Evan Gabriel Triology which can be read before or after reading the other three titles. A recruit in the elite Naval Special Forces, Evan Gabriel strives to be the head of his class and is soon chosen for a top-secret military experiment that will force him to make critical choices and a dangerous situation while coming to grips with who or what he has become.

As I have mentioned before,I'm never been a huge fan of Science Fiction and military type stories but Steve Umstead and Michael K. Rose in particular are changing my views. I hate to compare this to movies but "Zero Point" is a mixture of "Universal Solider" and "The Bourne Identity".

Umstead's writing is clear, engaging and the characters are well defined. Action within the novella is handled and described well finding a perfect balance. As with Rose's "Sullivan's War" series the technology used in "Zero Point" is realistic and described well enough that there is no doubt how they operate. Overall "Gabriel: Zero Point" was a great read that has peaked my interest in the "Evan Gabriel Trilogy".

Normally I don't read as much science fiction as I do fantasy. I was introduced to Steve Umstead's works on Twitter, and picked up Zero Point frankly because it was free.

I was quickly sucked in by the opening, which clearly hints at intrigue to come. I was drawn in further by the main character, Evan Gabriel, who is both a career military man and a man of honor. I had a hard time putting this down, even to the point of being late for dinner plans because I couldn't stop reading. Watching Gabriel deal with the situations thrown at him in Zero Point, I could see he is a character I want to spend several books with.

I now have the entire trilogy in my possession, and I'm very much looking forward to reading them too.
