5.0 out of 5 stars Very good interpretations of little known music, October 8, 2003

This review is from: Gabrieli: Missa Pater Peccavi - Motets & Instrumental Music (Audio CD)
I would take issue with the Amazon reviewer - Andrea Gabrieli's music is frequently more out-going than that of his nephew, the famous Giovanni Gabrieli. Andrea Gabrieli's problem is that his music is still relatively unknown by singers, musicians, conductors and music lovers.

I feel that even though a minimalistic approach has been taken on this disc it works well. The playing from HMS&C is very good and the singing is also up to a high standard. One minor quibble - I would have liked to have heard this Mass performed with trebles (i.e. boy sopranos). Cornetts and sackbuts 'blend' much better with these kinds of voices. However, this is not a major issue for me with this CD.

The Mass is a beautiful work and the instrumental ricercari are very nice too!

I look forward to more discs of vocal/instrumental works from these performers. Perhaps some Willaert, Lassus or Rore next time?

Anyway, well done to all concerned. A beautiful recording.
