Book Description

The year is 1871, and life at a remote lighthouse off the Georgia coast has become routine for Livvy Drummond. Then a wounded convict escapes from a passing prison ship and swims ashore. He threatens her and collapses at her feet. When Lieutenant Gabriel Hampton opens his eyes, he beholds an angel. An angel who not only nurses him back to health, but senses the nobility beneath his rugged, feral appearance. Having escaped a life sentence, the result of an unjust court martial, he finds new life, and new love, in the hands of the lightkeeper’s beautiful granddaughter. Springtime on the remote island is nearly idyllic for Livvy and Gabe until circumstances tear them apart. Although Livvy is determined to help Gabe escape his hopeless future, secrets from her childhood threaten to destroy what she and Gabe have built —secrets that tragically link her to Gabe in a way neither would ever have dreamed. Will they be able to find their way back to each other? Or will the Civil War claim another two victims?

5.0 out of 5 stars Gabriel's Angel July 30, 2008
By M. Nix
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Before Victoria Alcott died she made arrangements for her beloved ten year-old daughter, Olivia, to be taken to Holliwell Drummand rather than stay with Julian or Edith Alcott; Olivia's uncle and grandmother. Holly is Victoria's estranged father. When the day arrives, Olivia is whisked away to live on St. Brigid's island in the lighthouse with her grandfather. To protect her anonymity, she is now a Drummand.

Twelve years later Gabriel Hampton is traveling in chains aboard a ship from Fort Jefferson prison. Gabriel gets into a fight with a guard and he is shot. He throws himself overboard in the hopes of reaching the light he sees in the distance.

As Livvy is doing her midnight chores in the lighthouse, she sees a man rise from the water and races down to help him. Livvy and Holly confront the man who is dressed in prison garb. Before they get any information from him though, he passes out.

Livvy and Holly nurse Gabe back to health. During the course of his recovery Gabe is becoming very fond of Livvy and Livvy feels the same for Gabe. Livvy believes Gabe has been falsely accused of treason. Soon Gabe has to leave and face his past. Livvy is left to deal with the loss of her love and the family she left behind in Savannah.

Circumstances bring Gabe and Livvy back together again, but when it turns out that Gabe is responsible for hurting Livvy's Uncle Julian, can they ever get back the love they shared on St. Brigid's island?

Gabriel's Angel is a wonderfully told story about the impacts of war and finding love when and where you least expect it. Gabe and Livvy fell deeply in love despite the odds against them. Gabe is a good man and Livvy is a sweetheart. Their love grows beautifully throughout the story. Gabriel's Angel is a story with a realistic depiction of war and heart warming love.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love at the lighthouse! March 30, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
This book is endearing! Livvy is a well defined, innocent and empathetic character - and Gabriel the perfect dark counterpart! The lighthouse is just as much of a character...well done, Ms. Thomason

4.0 out of 5 stars intriguing Reconstruction Era romance May 23, 2006
Format:Mass Market Paperback
In 1859, thirty-five years old Victoria Alcott is dying, but her biggest fear is for the safety of her daughter, ten years old Olivia. Since her spouse James died, she has felt like an intruder with his family and does not trust her brother-in-law Julian or her mother-in-law to do right by Olivia. Though estranged from her father for fourteen years and recognizing she was at fault, she sends her child to live with her grandfather Holliwell "Holly" Drummond knowing he will keep her beloved Olivia safe.

Twelve years later, former Union Officer Lieutenant Gabriel Hampton, badly beaten, escapes from a prison ship managing to reach St. Brigid's Island. Livvy and Holly nurture him back to help as both can see he is an honorable person. As Gabe and Livvy fall in love, their pasts will arrive threatening their lives.

Cynthia Thomason provides an intriguing Reconstruction Era romance with a touch of early and late suspense. Livvy is a marvelous protagonist (her naive innocence will remind readers of Demi Moore's character in The Butcher's Wife without the paranormal skills). Gabe is a solid counterpart as he believes she deserves someone with a future, which rules him out. Americana romance fans will enjoy this love at the lighthouse tale.

Very tenderhearted story. Warms the heart. Writer writes as if she lived in the 1800's herself. Would love to see a sequel to this book.

More About the Author

I'm Cynthia Thomason, writer of romance and some mystery. I am from America's heartland - born in Indiana and raised in Ohio. While working my way through college, I took a job at a radio and TV station and got hooked on journalism. For ten years I followed my dream of becoming a teacher. I taught high school English in Michigan, Ohio and Florida until my husband and I started an auction company. I became a licensed auctioneer and estate buyer which fed my love for uncovering unusual and oddball items. Luckily I haven't yet crossed the line between collector and hoarder! Recently my writer husband, Walter, and I sold our business. I miss the excitement of the auction but I can write full time now. I also have time to experiment with the new Kindle craze. I have some back list titles up now for purchase. I have won the HOLT Medallion Award, the Golden Quill and Readers' Choice Awards and I've been nominated several times for the prestigious Maggie Award. I love to write about American's small towns, similar to the one where I grew up in Summit County, Ohio. I like to travel the U.S. especially in the travel trailer we just bought so we can take Sparky, our adorable silky terrier mix. I have one son, also a writer. My favorite place to spend an afternoon is the mountains of North Carolina, but I haven't been to Ireland yet.
