Book Description

Ruby Pickens Tartt , Vol 2 May 1, 1997
Together for the first time, these slave narratives from Sumter County, Alabama, were transcribed by Ruby Pickens under the auspices of the WPA. The narratives offer rich insight into the periods of the American Civil War and Reconstruction, as well as the early Great Depression years. In turn shocking and humorous the narratives are sometimes presented as stories, litanies of complaints.

Review

Together for the first time in print, Gabr'l Blow Sof' is a collection of Alabama's Sumter County slave narratives. Most of them were originally collected by Ruby Pickens Tartt under the auspices of the WPA and offer rich insight into the periods of the Civil War and Reconstruction. Collected during the years of the "Great Depression", these stories naturally reflect on that period as well -- if one reads between the lines. These tales are by turns sad, shocking, and humorous. Some are organized as stories, some as character sketches, some as litanies of intermingled remembrances and complaints. But whatever their organization, each one evokes a time in our Black American history that must not be forgotten. Gabr'l Blow Sof' is highly recommended reading! -- Midwest Book Review
