Editorial Reviews

Gachupín is the band of former Cordero/Bee and Flower band mates Lynn Wright and Jon Petrow (The Cloud Room), bassist Tony Maimone (John Langford, Pere Ubu) and drummer Chris Michael (Coba). Started as a studio side project to explore the Latin and African elements of Cordero's more rhythmic tunes, the band now includes Brian Dewan (Raymond Scott Orchestrette) on keyboards, Miguel Gandelman on Alto Sax, Scott Harrell (Folklore Urbano) on Trumpet, John Martin on Baritone Sax, Sam Sadigursky on Tenor, Frank London (Klezmatics) on Trumpet, percussionist Sergio Borrero and future Colombian percussion legend El Yoky on Alegre. Blending African guitar stylings with Brazilian and Afro-Colombian rhythms, they draw on electric funk era Miles Davis and the more groove-oriented elements of the post-everything music world to create an instrumental hybrid that is danceable but still an interesting listen for the lead-footed, cross-armed brothers and sisters among us.
