2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointment, May 30, 2003

This review is from: The Gadd Gang Live (DVD)
If you want to get this DVD because you like Steve Gadd's amazing drumming, then save yourself the money and pass on this.

I'm a HUGE Steve Gadd fan, and seeing that this DVD had Eddie Gomez (of Chic Corea fame), I was very excited to get it. What a disappointment. I'm sorry I bought this. The performance comes off like they just grabbed some material from a fake book, rehearsed maybe once, then went out and stole their paychecks.

There is no creativity in the arrangements, none. Some of the solos are very good, but you have to wait too many songs between good solos. There is very little display of musicianship on this; the band I was in in high school could have pulled this off. Some of these guys are among the best musicians on their instruments, but the canned, dummied down arrangements never let that be known. What a waste of great musicians.

You are better off renting this from Netflix or Blockbuster; I'd be surprised if you'd watch this more than once. The only reason I have tried to watch it more than once was to give it another chance and see if I liked it better... nope.

True, it is probably a better for the blues fans and really does not really show off Steve Gadd's greatness but had some better than great Bari sax solos by Ronnie "King" Cuber.... The sax solo on "Things Ain't What They Used To Be" was really nice !

To blue's fans, it's a very good DVD. Not to jazz's fans. The quality of sound and image is really excellent. I think the band's sound is hard, with a few notes, but with groove and feeling. I didn't like the drums which appears as the most important instrument in the band. I really liked Eddy Gomez (bass) and Cornell Dupree (guitar)in their perfomance as solists. Finally, I can say I don't regret to have bought this DVD, but it's too much noise for me.
