Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Higuchi's odd mashup of superhumans and cruel prep school antics (think X-Men meet Harry Potter) continues in this second volume of the popular Japanese series. Ten-year-old Heroine Mikan has just received a disastrous no-star rating at the Alice Academy. As a result, she's been demoted—she has to move to the no-star dorm rooms, her allowance has been cut, and most of her school privileges have been revoked. Devastating? It would be if the rest of the volume addressed those consequences. Instead, Mikan immediately joins the maverick Special Class, participates in an out-of-control game of dodgeball and tries to get in touch with the grandfather she left behind. Higuchi has created a detailed world, with lots of rules and backstories, but the continued focus on school story tropes means that the world is revealed almost arbitrarily, making it hard to keep track of. Higuchi's art is more than competent. Consistently thin lines leave characters appearing consistently vulnerable, and once every several pages there is a lovingly rendered detailed background. If one can get past a few unintentionally creepy moments (like Mikan climbing into bed with a teacher and asking if she can call him grandfather), this manga is an acceptable entry in the vast school story category. 5.0 out of 5 stars Gakuen Alice Volume 2 - Adjusting to Life at the Alice Academy, April 3, 2008
This review is from: Gakuen Alice Volume 2 (v. 2) (Paperback)
After successfully passing the entrance exam for the exclusive Alice Academy, Mikan Sakura finds that adjusting to her new life, classmates and teachers is not going to be easy. Mikan's Alice is the Alice of Nullification that allows her to nullify all other Alice's. Professor Narumi choses her arch-enemy Natsume to be her partner and he is assigned to teach her about school life.

She quickly learns that each student is ranked based on his/her Alice level and behavior. The ranking system - no-star, one star, double star, triple star and special star is the basis for privileges from dorm room to the amount of food at meals. Thanks to Natsume's gang who have become her enemies Mikan is blamed for a class disturbance that her enemies have created. Her math teacher who believes in stern discipline gives her the rank of no-star which is usually reserved for babies and mediocre talents. He also brands her a trouble maker. Despite this set-back Mikan strives to overcome her handicaps and works toward her goals of improving her star rating and becoming accepted by the other students.

In addition to regular classes, each student has Alice classes where he/she receives training for his/her Alice. The Alice classes fall into 5 categories: latent, technical, somatic, special and dangerous. Mikan's Alice places her the Special class which contains most of the misfits of the school. Junior and Elementary division students are combined for Alice classes and a junior student, Tsubasa takes Mikan under his wing and makes her feel welcome. He also advises her that she needs to find a physical outlet for her classmates to counteract their frustrations which are creating havoc for her hapless homeroom teacher. Thanks to her positive attitude and perserverence, Mikan is slowly winning new friends and respect.

Mikan learns from a classmate that her grandfather has been coming to the school gate daily only to be turned away by the guard. She also learns that all of the letters she has written to her grandfather have been burned because Alice students are not to have contact with relatives without the permission of the school. When Mikan attempts to leave the school grounds to find her grandfather she is almost kidnapped by thugs who want to sell her for her Alice talent. Professor Narumi rescues her and tells her that he will watch over her.

This series has a fascinating premise and has become really addictive for me. I am eagerly looking forward to Volume 3. I highly recommend this series.
