The Daring Rescue - Gakuen Alice 3, June 23, 2008
This review is from: Gakuen Alice Volume 3 (v. 3) (Paperback)
I highly recommend this series. I find that there is just the right blend of humor and action. As the series progresses the author teases us with tantalizing revelations which only add more mysteries about the Academy and the characters to be solved. I find myself eagerly anticipating the next book in the series.
In this volume Mikan finds out about the annual school festival which is coming up soon. Narumi-sensei explains that all of the classes participate and vie for top honors. The students are teamed up by ability type-latent, somatic, mechanical and special. The only ones who are excluded are special ability types who are also classified as Dangerous ability like Natsume.
The festival is supposed to promote making new friends and team work. Mikan quickly finds out that the special ability group has given up trying to win. They have so many different unrelated alices that it makes it difficult to find anything in common. Mikan comes up with a plan that the others agree to enthusiastically. Mikan also decides to try to make friends of her enemies especially Natsume and his number one groupie Sumire.
Another poorly kept surprise is that the faculty is bringing in a famous Alice Academy Alumnus who is a movie star. His alice is a pheremone voice that hypnotizes anyone who hears it. A plot is soon hatched by Mikan and her friends to see Reo in person when he has a checkup at the hospital. Most of the conspirators get caught by the teachers. However, Mikan is just about to see Reo when she runs into Sumire who is supposedly there to visit Natsume. The two of them watch in horror when they see Reo and his bodyguards subduing and kidnapping Natsume.
Together the two run out the Academy gates right behind the limosine carrying Reo and Natsume. I won't spoil the thrilling ending but this volume explains why Natsume is placed in the dangerous ability type and introduces the secret anti-Academy underground group Z as well as more background on Mikan herself.
