beware too much passion, January 13, 2000

Well, I must say don't taste nor understand opera but ever thought a fault of mine and what these was a refined spectacle. Now I have my doubts. Few days ago there was an hommage at the Teatro Real of Madrid to the recently dead artist Alfredo Kraus, a famous Spanish tenor very loved by his high quality and for being a very good person (the dead of his wife virtually killed him after decades of marriage). It was announced that Luciano Pavarotti and other two or three top opera singers were acting in this function, but there was rumours about no much friendship between Kraus and his hommageurs for professional jealousy. Well, in effect it happened that the most famous stars failed to go claiming suspicious excuses and the direction of the theatre didn't warned the public in advance. When people yet seated knew they had payed high prices to see none of the best artists, the following scenes seemed the most wild boxing championship though I don't believe Mohamed Ali or Mike Tyson would behave so raging and furious as some public. I think no, at less against an Italian soprano whom implored desperatery joining hands during twenty minutes, on and off the scenario, waiting the tremendous tornado should finish. Curtains, seats and doors were brutally wretched and almost the theatre fired in flames. The director scaped by milimeters to be hanged in a lamp. People gone to see Tosca but what they really got was "Raging Bull". If this is true culture...
