5.0 out of 5 stars I NEED MORE STARS
I have been a rock music addict since I roamed the womb and have never heard a debut of this magnitude! The label (Geffen) dropped the ball with this group and instead spent their efforts on Nirvana (Nevermind) and we know what happened there. This band proves to be all that 10 Nirvanas could never be - musically, lyrically, vocally and creatively the very best in all...

3.0 out of 5 stars A good start, but the best was yet to come
Galactic Cowboys' debut album starts off with 3 strong tracks, but lags a bit from there on, with the exception of "Kill Floor" -- speaking of which, I found it a bit odd that a group of professed Christians would compose a song that many Christians in positions of authority would cite as violent and, most likely, as being a negtive influence. But at any rate, it's worth...

4.0 out of 5 stars Where It All Began..., March 9, 2003

The Galactic Cowboys were probably one of the most underrated bands in the metal/rock genre... probably because they were a little too hard to simply throw into a box. The best way I can describe their sound to someone who hasn't heard it is to say that they've managed to combine some of the crunch of Metallica and Pantera, with the hooks and harmony vocals of The Beatles, a touch of the lushness of Pink Floyd (here and there), and a subtle dashing of Monty Pythonesque humor.

Yes, that is possible - though I must admit, it's an acquired taste.

I like this album - but I think "Space In Your Face" is a little better. Worth having though - It's the perfect example of a band that was doing something different, and not enough people got it. Shame really. They're great writers, and very nice guys. They will be missed greatly...

5.0 out of 5 stars blow me to bermuda this rocks!!!!, February 4, 2003

i saw this band live with dream theatre opening. they are awesome. very tight musically with thick guitars, a solid rhythm section (with a great drummer and solid bassist) and wonderful vocals. the music is diverse their is electric guitar and acoustic guitar. they play nice at times and other times hit you fast and furious. i love the eleven minute epic that ends this wonderful cd.
the songwriting is strong with vocal melodies and great harmonies. the music is melodic too and then they lace vocal harmony/melody which enhances things. amazing band. too bad they were dropped by geffen. their is one other album called space in your face with geffen that is just a hair beneath this, in my huble opinion. after that i believe they moved to metal blade and they sound VERY different. much more metal. i like it but this cd is their 1st and nothing beats it.

5.0 out of 5 stars How Do I Love Thee?, June 15, 2000

O Galactic Cowboys, how do I love thee? Let me count the riffs...

This is one of those "desert island" CD's--one that I would HAVE to have with me on a desert island. It's got grinding riffs, sensitive passages, creative twists, and even--heaven forbid--a sense of humor (one which, may I add, only hints at just how funny these guys can be). I actually own about four copies of this--I keep buying them to give to friends, but never want to part with them, "just in case mine gets scratched." ;)

This band broke up in late July of '00--and it's a shame. There's no such thing as a bad Galactic Cowboys song, and they give every live show their all. It's heartbreaking to think that there will be no more Galactic Cowboy CD's after their upcoming release... but at least we'll have their catalog, including this debut (can you believe it's a DEBUT?) to keep things going.

In summary... Powerful playing, harmonic singing, subtle messages, humor, and take-no-prisoners 'tude. It's everything and all that. I cannot recommend this album enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars cult CLASSIC, June 6, 2003

GC never made it big commercially, but their debut album earned them a legion of devoted fans. If you like heavy, crunchy guitars, 3 & 4 part vocal harmonies (actual singing, not just yelling), songwriting that is catchy and accessible yet at the same time complex enough to be interesting, lyrics that are intelligent and humorous, production that is crisp and clean.... I could go on and on.

This, their debut album, is second only to SPACE IN YOUR FACE (their second effort). Both albums were produced by the magnificent Sam Taylor. After that the sound of the band changed quite a bit, with the loss of both Taylor and guitarist Dane Sonnier.

If you buy this and like it, get yourself a copy of SPACE IN YOUR FACE off of ebay or whatever, as it is no longer being printed, and is, IMHO, the Cowboys' finest hour.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb Listening Pleasure, June 12, 1998
This review is from: Galactic Cowboys (Audio CD)
If you want something new in a hard rock sound, this is it. I have listened to the GC for 3 years now and never grow tired. Kaptin Krude jams hard and Kill Floor leaves ya beggin for more. While those are my 2 favorites, all the songs are excellent you need to hear em for yourself. Almost each track is in excess of 5 mins, the last 4 even play back to back without an interruption like it is one song. This album keeps you rocking. Enjoy!

4.0 out of 5 stars Unusual but GREAT original bizarre heavy tunes!, January 16, 2012
This review is from: Galactic Cowboys (Audio CD)
This great band sadly split a few years back and have only played a handful of shows since. This their debut first album is from around 1991, and was a highly different heavy rock album. They mixed up heavy thrash metal, grunge kind of sound, with catchy big melodic pop BEATLES style sounds. This was probaly some of their heavier tunes, but still equally very melodic uplifting and with catchy choruses unlike any other heavy bands.
They put out around another four or five albums, getting less heavy more groove and trippy pop sounding as time passed. Very cool metal strangeness with uplifting moments not to be missed. Lets hope these mad guys get back together in future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Clever music, cruchy guitars and beautiful harmonies, December 20, 2008
This review is from: Galactic Cowboys (Audio CD)
This is one of my all time favorite albums. I read a review for this in a magazine and since I love heavy music with melodic vocals I decided to check it out. From the first listen I was hooked on three of the songs on the album, the remainder I came to appreciate over a few listens. To me this is one of the most original rock projects of all time.
The bands next project, Space in Your Face, was awesome, after this it is down hill. I dont know what happened to this band but it seemed they went from being original to trying to be like everyone else.
