This is a compilation of greatest hits from over the last decade, which makes it a nice, if at times incoherent, sampler from one of today's coolest bands. Galactic offers something for everyone: a spice of soul, a touch of rock, and a pinch of acid jazz--only its mixed bourbon street style. So though it may not be for the Jazz-only crowd, it appeals to 'eclectic' funk-rockers. If you enjoy The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, then Galactic is quite a treat.

Vintage Reserve is a compilation of early Galactic material. The vast majority of the songs on the compilation come from Galactic's first three albums: Coolin' Off, Crazyhorse Mongoose, and Late for the Future. However, it does include some exclusive material. That being said, the compilation may not be what newer fans expect if they've gotten into Galactic via their most recent albums like Ya-Ka-May or Carnivale Electricos. The sound of these recordings is more jazzy and funkier than the rock and hip-hop based material on their recent releases.

Overall, Vintage Reserve is a decent sampler of Galactic's early material and would probably be great for people looking to get into Galactic (especially their older material) but you can't help but wonder why some songs are not on the release. I, for one, would've loved to see them include classics like "Funky Bird", "Change My Ways", and "Baker's Dozen". Still, the compilation gives you about 67 minutes of great music, some of which is exclusive to the release.

The first exclusive is "Get a Head On". The song was originally featured on Crazyhorse Mongoose as a hidden track at the end of "Quiet Please" but this is the first time that the song appears on its own as a separate track, which is much more convenient than trying to skip past several minutes of "Quiet Please" to hear the song.

The compilation's second exclusive is "The Green Minute", a song that was recorded during the sessions for the band's third album Too Late for the Future but left out of the album because they could not find a good spot for it.

The other two exclusive are live cuts. The first of these is a roughly eight minute long version of the New Orleans traditional "Sew Sew Sew".

Vintage Reserve is a 2003 release compilation album by the New Orleans, LA based band Galactic. It features tracks found on their three previous records, as well as two live, unreleased tracks. The band has developed a unique sound as a result of their influences, including, hip hop, electronic, world music, rock, blues and jazz.

The band displays a New Orleans funk style, but with a few changes from their earlier efforts. They have included increased use of electronic effects on guitar, bass, saxophone, and drums. Ben Ellman, saxophonist and harmonica player, often distorts his instruments to the degree that they sound similar to an electric guitar.

Galactic Personel..
Theryl DeClouet...vocals
Ben Ellman...harmonica, programming, saxophone
Robert Mercurio...bass, vocals,
Stanton Moore...drums, loops
Richard Vogel...keyboards
Jeff Raines...guitar

I read...

"This is music as the deconstruction of a sonic palette, as the deconstruction, death, and rebirth of a band. And, like Medeski, Martin and Wood before them, Galactic is all the better for its brave new world direction."

Jazz and funk collide, simmering organ grooves and intricate drum loops abound while the groove takes over and runs wild. "Vintage Reserve" gets better with each play just like a vintage wine is enhanced if given the time to breathe.

This is a must have for jazz enthusiasts, a top shelf performance by a tight group of professionals. I give this 5 1/2 stars and I'm not a jazz fanatic. I'm sure it deserves a 10.

That's three stars like before the internet said anything half decent is 5. Nice and mellow.

Non-mainstream. Good instrument backup to vocals.
