Book Description

May 5, 2009
Fusella Mierter, employee of Terran Space Administration, used to be very happy commanding the quirky little science ship Galaxion. Her crew is her family, and she wouldn't trade her family for the world. But all their lives are suddenly turned upside down when she learns that her ship and crew are being temporarily handed over to Interplanetary Patrol General Scavina Nelson and her team in order to install and test a new jump drive engine! Now Fusella must take a back seat on board her own ship and hope that it'll all be over soon. Too bad the test run doesn't go as planned....

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally! Smart Science Fiction with strong women characters!, May 11, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Galaxion Vol. 1: The Jump (Paperback)
My daughter really loves science fiction and fantasy. But she has the same complaint, over and over: Where are the girls? Where are the strong female lead characters.

Well here we go. Galaxion has a traditional `space opera' setting: star ships, captains, jump drives, alien artifacts, etc., and then gives us a crew that has
two extremely redeeming qualities:

(1) They include several (not just one!) interesting, complex and
easy-to-relate-to women characters representing a wide range of
viewpoints and experience. Along with several rather interesting male
characters, too.

(2) They establish a realistic social dynamic.

What I mean by (2) is that the characters are not all five-sigma wacky
cyber-genius martial-arts-death-machines. They are real people with real
strengths and weaknesses, able to function is an effective and realistic way
to address all kinds of challenges. This is not to say that there are not
interesting quirks -- I especially like the character who favorite hat is
make from tableware -- but as a rule the crew works together in cooperation
instead of in conflict. Kinda refreshing given the dominance of darkness
in the genre these days.

Anyway, I recommend it. For you, and for your kids!
