DAMN it's good!,
By Alliyah (Floating in the Sea of Stars^^) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Galaxy Express 999, Vol. 1 (Paperback)
Here's a summery of the 18 volumes, NO spoilers^_~"You think Tetsuro Hoshino has seen the last of the Gallaxy Express? Starting where the 2 part movie left off, Maetel sets Tetsuro back on the path to Manhood (NOTE, he is VERY young) & the trail of goals, making new friends & discovering the ones he'd thought gone, learning the harsh lessons of reality in the endless sea of stars. Mysteries come to light, only to be darkened by a new challenge or question or an old memory, & the entire gallaxy asks only of Tetsuro to survive & NEVER to forget. Leiji Matsumoto, the creator, is second in popularity only to Hayao Miyazaki (Kiki, Totoro, Laputa, Lupin), & has one many awards for his interconnecting series. This is one the whole family should watch because it's sincere, complex, inovative, provocative, dramatic, & contemplative above everything else. It's a helluva good story/plot that makes you think about the facts of life & its challenges. It has nothing corny or cliche, a literary masterpiece(despite the craappy artwork). It teaches about achieving goals, following hopes & dreams & beliefs, finding ones purpose in life, & keeping promises. Personally, I wouldn't trade MY collection if you offered me 3 times what the whole set is worth^o^ His writings are like.......Pringles. "Once you pop, you can't stop."

Dynamic and Captivating,
This review is from: Galaxy Express 999, Vol. 1 (Paperback)
Upon first seeing serial installments of GE999 in Animerica, Ithought it looked a little silly, but decided to buy a mange so i could read the whole story. I'm hooked. In one afternoon, the book managed to push Ghost in the Shell and Nausicaa out of my top spot for manga. Not to slight either, but Galaxy Express is even more mystical and captivating than even Nausicaa was. The quirky artwork only lends character. It's the storyline that is so brilliant. most of the time it moves at a slow deliberate pace, with the mother-figure Maetel cluing in the reader and wide-eyed Tetsuro at the same time. Its sorrowful plot twists and interludes left me craving more. I'm certain I'll buy the next book. Without a doubt, this is the finest manga I have ever read. Its complexity is admirable.

I have liked GE 999 ever since I started readng it in Animerica magazine. So, I got this book, but discovered that this is actually the *sequel* to the *first* adventure of Maetel and Tetsuro. I got this information from the biographies of the characters and the clues in the story. As a result of not havign read the first series, I am a tad bit lost. Can someone tell me WHY they chose to publish the sequel in English before they translated the first series? It doesn't make any sense!Anyway, the characters are fun and I enjoy their adventures. But the blurb at the end of every chapter is too deep and confusing for me to understand. I like this, and I will look up the first series--right after I find out who started this translating mess in the first place.

Fantastic story and art from one of the most influential manga artists!,

This book is a real treat for any fan of retro science fiction stories crossed with melancholy, existential overtones. It is one of Leiji Matsumoto's few manga works that have been translated here. The translation is excellent, although a downside is that the book is "flipped". Since Japanese comics are read from right to left, Viz flipped the art to make the book read left to right. This is unappealing simply because the art is not presented in its original form. For instance, Captain Harlock, a space pirate, has an eyepatch over his right eye, but in this book, he appears to have it over his left. That aside, this IS practically the only access to GE999 manga that you can find in English, so it's forgivable. Another thing to note: this series is actually the sequel to the original GE999, which was never published in English. Why Viz decided to publish the sequel only is beyond me, but if you can't read Japanese, you can find the entire animated series of GE999 streaming on [...]. The story will be far less meaningful if you haven't already been acquainted with Maetel, Tetsuro and company so I suggest you see a few episodes for a better understanding of what this is all about.

Galaxy Express 999,

This a great magna. Just great. Although adoua Galaxy Express 999 was not part of the story line in magna Galaxy Express, it otherwise ties right in with the story line. I greatly encourage anyone with about an extra 20 bucks to purchase this book. The book picks up with Maetel on the 999. She picks up Tetsou on a brand new Earth. No nature what so ever. They depart and start a whole new adventures including a brief appearence of Harlok. Unfortunatly there is no Emereldas in this book. P.S. Who else thought the Amazon description of this book kinda stunk. (please excuse all spelling errors, thank you)
