The holster is only decent. For the money I'd look elsewhere. Being that not many people make a holster for the 686 I went with this one. The holster is not really tight and required no break in. The holster did not retain the revolver at all when turned upside down. Mouth is not reinforced.

Overall its overpriced for what you get. I'd pass. If you find one used then go for it!

First of all, I bought this for a 3" model 686. It still works just fine FYI. The barrel protrudes maybe 1/4" and the trigger is still fully protected. It seems quite secure. It's a somewhat heavy SS revolver which tends to pull pants down so I rarely use this anymore for general carry but it works just fine and it does conceal the revolver well when it isn't pulling your pants down. Suspenders would fix that I suppose. I give it 4 stars not because of any glaring faults but only because there are better holsters out there. It's just difficult to find one for a 3" L frame. The Akers flatsider comes to mind specifically but it isn't available for this revolver apparently. I have this same (but smaller) holster for a J frame scandium aluminum S&W .357. It's easy to forget that you are carrying a gun in this combo and it has held up very well after several years of regular concealed carry. It's invisible under a heavy weight T-Shirt that is a size too big. The larger revolver is mostly invisible under the same shirt provided it isn't pulling your pants down. It's well made. It works for what it is. It isn't the best holster you can buy.

This is a great holster for a 2-1/2" S&W "L" frame 686. Get a good holster belt and this holster makes the heavy medium sized revolver a breeze to carry. I use this holster mostly for outdoors carry while camping and fishing etc. It tucks the gun into my side and keeps it from getting snagged while doing outdoor activities. When the holster is in use on a good quality holster belt the revolver is retained very well. I could do a somersault and the gun would stay put. When needed it draws smoothly. The mouth stays open enough to make holstering easy as well.
This is a very well made, simple, basic holster that works very well. The price is a little steep for what it is, but the quality is excellent!

I like it very much, it's only one thing it doesn't have a way to hold it while you carry the gun .it shoud have a piece of leather to secure it by the hammer
