I have a particular interest in Galen's Method of Medicine, since I have a website on classical Greek Medicine, which is . Hippocrates was the father of Greek Medicine, but Galen expanded on and advanced the medical ideas and practice of Hippocrates to become the summit or apex of Greco-Roman medicine, and his works became the "bible" of medicine for over a thousand years, in both the Judeo-Christian and Islamic worlds. I already had a copy of Galen's Hygiene (De Sanitate Tuenda), which deals with the preservation of health, so I had to get the Method of Medicine, which deals with therapeutic interventions to restore health in those who have lost it. These two works represent what Galen saw as the two basic parts of the physician's art - the preservation of health in those who are healthy, and the restoration of health in those who are suffering from disease or infirmity. I have scanned through the basic outline of the Method of Medicine, and am making my way through the initial introductory chapters, and from what I have seen, it does indeed appear to be impressive and comprehensive in scope. But I know from past experience reading Galen that he isn't exactly the easiest read there is - Hippocrates is simpler and more direct - and don't yet know how well I will make my way through it. or to what exact extent I will be able to put it to use. Therefore, I am withholding the final fifth star on this review. But regarding the central and immense importance that Galen's Method of Medicine represents in classical Greek and Greco-Roman medicine, it is essential reading and an indispensable reference work for anyone interested in this field of traditional healing.
