I am a decades long superfan of Galen Rowell. When I first saw his work at a Nature Company gallery in Berkeley in 1986, I was speechless. Back in 1987s-2001 I took a number of classes with him, including a 4 day class in Yosemite, and have read (and reread) many of his books. These encounters changed my life. I don't think I have every met anyone as impressive, and as a result of my jobs, I have met Nobel laureates, astronauts, the Secretary of Energy, etc. Fortunately, for a long time Galen's gallery was only a few miles from where I live, and I spent a lot of time being blown away by his work. The guy was astounding and so willing to help aspiring photographers. One of a kind.

I purchased this book at Amazon almost reflexively when I happened across it. This is essentially a "coffee-table" book. Almost all of the photos have already been published in other Rowell books. There is a little review of Galen's life, but of course no new text by Rowell, who died in a small plane crash one mile from his new home in the Eastern Sierras in 2002.

If you want a beautiful coffee table book, this is a fine choice. The reproductions are high quality and the selection of images sound. For me, well, it was a little bit of a let down. While his seminal book "Mountain Light" is technically outdated (based on film), I would still recommend it as a better choice for just about anyone who wants to understand Galen Rowell's philosophic and photographic approachs. I have 3 copies, two signed.

It seemed like every time I interacted with Galen, something magical happened. I still tell the many stories to anyone who is interested. I really miss him.

Admittedly, I really like the eastern Sierra Nevada area down highway 395. This book encapsulates the area's topography and atmosphere in a most majestic way. The images are, of course, stunning and unlike anyone else's. The text is pure Rowell. If you like the high desert motif, this is a must item for your photo book collection. Better still, visit the gallery in Bishop, CA, which houses many of these images. If you like Rowell's work, you will very much enjoy this book.

I bought this for a friend who is shut in following surgery, and appreciates creation that he can no longer currently hike in. The scenes, choice of varied and ideal lighting, and narrative are touching to the heart and peaceful to contemplate. I hope he enjoys them as much as my wife and I did in looking at the pictures prior to passing it along as a gift.

All I can say is Wow! Stunning photography. Spectacular colors. It makes you want to chuck it all and spend the rest of your life in the Sierra Nevadas chasing light. (If you're looking for more of a how to, pick up his Mountain Light book. Very well written, just the right amount of technical info, blended with great story telling. What a life!)

This is another excellent book by Galen Rowell. His photographs of the Sierra's brings them to life. He is today's Ansel Adams.

Very beautiful pictures and story line to follow. Galen Rowell had a gift that few others have or had! So sad he's gone!
