5.0 out of 5 stars A classic resin coated paper`, May 27, 2008

This particular Ilford paper is designed specifically for longevity with dye based inks and cannot be used with pigment based inks. It is NOT a nanoporous paper as Amazon stated in its blurb about this product. It is resin coated. As such, it is not subject to gas fade as is seen with the instant dry, nanoporous papers. You have to treat it very carefully as it comes from the printer and lay it on a flat surface to dry properly. Think of it as one of the old wet prints you used to make in the photolab. They needed to be properly dried before being handled too. I have used both the 8.5x11 and the 13x19 sheets of this paper, and I do like it. Because it is a resin coated paper, the color stability should be much better than the instant dry, nanoporous types of paper. Ilford claims you can leave a print made with this paper and a good quality dye ink completely exposed for years without significant color change. You do have to be very careful with the prints until they dry. I took one from the printer and managed to drop it face down on the floor. It picked up all the dust and a hair that was lying on the floor, and I couldn't get them off without ruining the print. It is pretty dry here in El Paso, TX, so my prints seem to dry fully to the touch within about 30 minutes of printing. I was doing a run of the same photograph yesterday and I laid them out side by side to dry. I noticed that the color seemed to change slightly as the prints dried. Initially I was concerned that there was a yellow cast to the prints, but this disappeared as they dried. I print on a Canon Pro9000 using only the Canon inks. I profile the monitor with a colorimeter, and I turn off color management in the printer driver and use the paper profile that Ilford supplies for this particular paper when printed on the Pro9000. It is super easy to download off their website, and it automatically installs itself. This gives you essentially WYSIWYG prints. The colors of the print are identical to what was on the monitor screen. They are not quite as bright however because the colors on the screen are viewed with transmitted light whereas the colors from a print are viewed with reflected light. The screen will always appear brighter.
I have now settled on two papers for my Pro9000. I absolutely love the Canon Semigloss Professional Plus for the feel of the paper and the lushness of the colors. The Ilford produces colors that are a bit darker than the Canon paper, but you really have to study the prints closely side-by-side to note any difference; it's that minute. Due to the lack of gas fade with the Ilford resin coated paper, I suspect prints made on it will last longer, under similar conditions, than those made on the Canon nanoporous paper. Ilford claims that the lifespan of a print made with compatible quality ink on the Classic Pearl paper will have the same life span as an RA4 wet lab print. This paper isn't cheap, so I tend to print on the less expensive Canon on a day-to-day basis. I will now use the Ilford for any print I want to give as a gift or in the rare intance that someone wants to purchase one.

The Classic Galerie Pearl is fantastic! I use 8 1/2 X 11, 11 X 17 and 13 X 19 inch in my HP PHotosmart 8750 printer. The paper is wonderful for both color and simply amazing for Black and White. This paper can only be used in dye ink printers, not pigment ink printers. The quick dry smooth pearl paper can be used for pigment printers. I have an Omega D-3 4 X 5 Autofocus Photo Enlarger and a Durst 6 X 6 CM Enlarger. I no longer need them since my digital work now matches and even exceeds my wet darkroom work! I don't think there is a finer paper anywhere--I tried several other brands and state without reservation that this is the paper to use. If you use this paper you need to treat it like exibition quality photo paper in processing--I air dry my prints using screens.

I use this paper to print my photos taken with Nikon's D2x, D-200 and Fuji S-2 Pro on a Canon i9900 printer. The results are quite similar to classic chemical process Ilford papers. The texture of the paper's finish is of the highest quality and the feel is just as with resin based papers. I am very pleased with this product.

This paper prints such vibrant images, I am stuck on it. I will not print with anything else. It looks like I ordered a photographic print. Great stuff, I would recommend it to anyone who wants a fantastic photo.

This is my second purchase of Ilford Classic Pearl Paper for my HP 13 x 19 printer. The quality of photos from my Canon Digital Rebel printed on the highest DPI setting is outstanding and we have many examples hung in various parts of our house - they always get admiration from guests and family.
