Upon reading the other reviewer's comments, I tend to think that the chestnuts may have been improperly stored - healthful foods rot faster than unhealthful ones (the microorganisms know what's good!) As far as these chestnuts are concerned, they are DELICIOUS! I was actually surprised that they are as good as they are because I thought that since they save you all the trouble of roasting and shelling that you would have to compromise somewhat on taste. Not so! Excellent product. A delicious AND healthful snack.

My vegan daughter loves chestnuts and these Galil fit the bill perfectly! They are shelled and packaged well for storage. She puts them in the freezer to eat daily for snacks. We are now ordering them consistently!! Very healthy and nutritious!

We bought this package at Costco last year. If I'd read these reviews, and the many more on the snack package version of the product, I would needless to say have not have bought them. And when we opened them up today we were as shocked as everyone else; most of the chestnuts were a very dark color, and the inside of the package is wet making them all look slimy. On top of that they are soft and taste mushy and a bit bland.

And yet I give them 4 stars! What is going on here? Well the main thing going on is the idiots who wrote the serving instructions of 'heat in microwave for 30 seconds'. All that does is make them more soft and mushy, and still look disgustingly dark and slimy. But how about, as we tried, if they'd said 'put them in the oven until they dry out a bit'. Then, like me, you might be saying, hey, these are pretty good! I like a bit of crunch so I put them in until they were a bit harder, and because they were now dried out the slime was gone and the dark color was actually appealing. And they tasted much more chestnutty.

Are they as good as fresh chestnuts roasted over an open fire? Well no, but if you throw them in the oven for a while they are pretty darn tasty, and a lot easier to eat.

Bought these for my dad for Valentine's Day because he loves Chestnuts. He said they tasted nice and fresh, and if he popped them in the oven a minute to warm them, it was just like eating the fresh roasted ones. He was very pleased. Will more than likely be back for more for him.

Standard purchase this time of year - roasted chestnuts. My husband makes the traditional English chestnut stuffing for Christmas dinner.

I tried these trying to do my own private taste testing to see if price and/or packing do make a difference. These are a half the price of the more expensive ones packed in jars and it is a pretty large bag. Taste wise they are OK, a little softer than the ones in the jar. I read the other reviews about them going bad after opening. I have the remainder of the bag in the refrigerator. Two weeks and they are ok. Still smaller portioned bags might be nice.

I still say, the best ones are the ones in the jar that Wms. Sonoma sells, but they sell out FAST.
