This review is from: Galileo (Hardcover)
I was browsing in the University Library looking for a nice biography of Galileo. I found a number of scholarly books whose aim was to describe Galileo's contributions to science. Most of these were too technical for my purpose. i was looking for a book that described the man and his times-the rich cultural background against which he lived and suffered. By a happy accident I found this wonderful book on Galileo by a person who is simultaneously a biographer, a historian and an excellent communicator.Apart from a very informative presentation of Galileo's life, the book provides a wonderful glimpse into the social, cultural and theological atmosphere of his times. An extensive collection of carefully collected drawings and paintings enhance the impact of the book. It is wonderful to look at an old drawing of Galileo's house on the hill overlooking Florence and to see the paintings of his teachers and benefactors. It is unfortunate that the designer of such book does not receive as much credit as he or she should receive. The book explains Galileo's Science as well as why he generated such controversy. The politics of theology is clearly explained. The pathos of Galileo's life is brought out without making it sentimental. The difficulties faced by the Church are also described in an objective way. This is a very satisfying biography profusely illustrated with loving care by carefully chosen illustrations. I feel that this book should have a place in every home library. This book could be nicely complemented by the book, 'GALILEO'S DAUGHTER'. |
