Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 7-Galileo and the Stargazers uses Jim Weiss's storytelling to highlight figures of mathematics and astronomy, including Archimedes, Ptolemy, Copernicus, Brahe, Newton and Galileo. "Archimedes and the Golden Crown" presents a biography of this Greek inventor/mathematician with a fairy-tale venue suited to ages five and up. Incorporating factual material, this narrative explains the relationship between displaced water and volume of an object in a story-like manner. Without mentioning specific principles, physics and geometry are introduced, along with his inventions such as "catapults." In historical context, listeners learn how people lived 23 centuries ago. This aids listeners in remembering facts still relevant in mathematics. Galileo and the Stargazers creates an historical time-line from Ptolemy to Newton. With distinctive voices, he projects emotion and intensity along with scientists' discoveries to sculpt unique characters. Listeners with knowledge of medieval history will find the details memorable such as Brahe mapping out 777 stars before the invention of the telescope, or Girodano Bruno sentenced to burn at the stake by the Catholic inquisition for his scientific beliefs. With no teacher's guide, bibliographic references or specific reading suggestions, use as an instructional tool depends upon the teacher. Whether augmenting the curriculum or for personal enjoyment, the author's ability to marry history with storytelling is successful.

5.0 out of 5 stars For the budding scientist . . ., April 21, 2001

This review is from: Galileo and the Stargazers (Audio CD)
Jim Weiss is an extraordinary storyteller who brings to life the process of scientific inquiry and discovery. My six year old son was so entranced by these stories of Archimedes, Brahe, Kepler, and Galileo he asked if he could go back out to the car to listen to the tape again. Worth listening to again and again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent CD for Children! My Daughters Love This Story, January 27, 2004
This review is from: Galileo and the Stargazers (Audio CD)
Master storyteller Jim Weiss is an incredible storyteller. The stories are so interesting for children. Many of his story CD's have been highly awarded, and this is one of them. This won a gold award from Parents Choice and was mentioned as one of the 25 best audio CD's in the past 25 years by Parents Choice.

My family first learned of Weiss's CD's when we checked one out from the library. It was excellent. We then learned about this one and acquired it, and my older daughter has been listening to it a couple evenings a week while she reads. The story is excellent, and she listens to it over and over.

The story brings out the imagination of a child and entertains in a good way - unlike some commercial childrens products.

Excellent!

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Audio, October 4, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Galileo and the Stargazers (Audio CD)
My son LOVES this tape! He listens to it every night, and can recite all the information about Galileo, Brahe, Archimedes, etc. In fact, I am now going to buy more of Mr. Weiss' tapes, just so we can have a little variety! Mr. Weiss has a way of entrancing young listeners -- so they are learning while they are being entertained. I highly recommend this!!
