It's about time!!!,

This review is from: Gallagher - The Smashing Watermelon Collection (DVD)
I have been waiting a long time for a decent Gallagher DVD to be released, but it has been worth the wait. This compilation contains 11 full length Gallagher concerts including:
Disc 1 "Mad As Hell" "Two Real" "Stuck in the 60's" "The Maddest" Disc 2 "Melon Crazy" "Over Your Head" "The Bookkeeper" "Overboard" Disc 3 "We Need A Hero" "Messin' Up Texas" "An Uncensored Evening" These all appear to be unedited and uncut since there original airing. I used to catch these concerts re-aired on Comedy Central on Saturday mornings but have not seen them for about 10 years. I am SO happy that they finally released this great collection of Gallagher works... his comedy has already stood the test of time for over 20 years, and with this DVD, Gallagher can be introduced to new audiences and remembered by his fans. There are also 2 "Best of Gallagher" DVD's that have been released, and I am wondering if they are just highlights from the 11 concerts contained on this "Smashing Watermelon Collection" or if they have different material on them. Hopefully someone will review them soon. If you like Gallagher, I am sure you will buy this collection... but even if you just like comedy, you should get this in order to realize just how smart and funny Gallagher really is and you will discover how much influence he has had on many other comedians.

It is great to finally get Gallgher on DVD. Only 2 problems I have noticed. Totally New is missing, and on a minor note Stuck in the 60's has some slight editing as during the song, the parts where he sings the chorus of a couple well known 60's songs, it has been taken out. Obvious crappy licensing issues that have caused some disasters to other DVD's. No other editing that I have noticed though.
But it still is a great collection with some concerts I have never seen before.

I'm so glad that all of Gallaghers vintage stand ups are finally on DVD. The DVD transfer is very good. You can actually see sweat dripping down his head. The watermellon box is a bit goofy, but it's hardly worth bitching about. I got this set for less then 19 dollars on deepdiscountdvd.com
god, what happened to good stand up comedy? The comedians today really suck. They all joke about the same thing; sex and how stupid white people are

Five Stars For What Content There is,

Okay, for starters, this is not all of Gallagher's comedy specials like I hoped it would be. It's missing "Totally New", "The Messiest of Gallagher", "I Can Make a Video, Too" and "Smashing Cheeseheads" (those are all the exemptions I know of). Secondly, it advertises "Mad as Hell" and "Two Real" as the opening two comedy specials. Sadly, this is all one show, just split up into two separate segments. "Two Real" is barely a half hour finisher to the original "Mad as Hell" special. Finally, the box these DVDs come in is an atrocity. It's made from the flimsiest of paper, no matter how gentle you are with it, it's going to get worn out very quickly. The DVDs themselves are not kept on solid backing, just more cardboard "cuteness". If "Anchor Bay" had wanted to impress buyers with the case, they should have made it a tin case like "Halloween 4". It may have jacked the cost up a bit, but Gallagher fans would have paid the extra bucks for the security of a good, solid, long-lasting case to house the discs in. Overall, the comedy specials this set contains are classics. But if you're looking for a complete retrospective of his career, or a lasting container to keep them in, you'll have to look elsewhere.

A rare find, poorly packaged,

It is hard to find much of Gallagher, a physical comedian that I enjoy watching.
This is an excellent collection of some of his work, including an early comedy-club appearance (you can tell he is unsure how his messier routines will go over with the crowd). Unfortunately, this package is clumsy in its construction and fit. It will not fit in any normal DVD shelf or rack. Far better that it were in a simple fat DVD box. The outer cover and cap are simply very-thick paper or very-light cardboard. It is certainly not firm enough to keep shape expecpt for the most careful of handling. Overall, an excellent purchase -- but do not have high hopes for the packaging.

If you, like me, grew up watching this guy you'll appreciate this collection. While the case may be a bit unusual and hard to fit on a DVD rack, the contents inside will keep you laughing all the way through. The only downside is the last two shows on the third disc, which were filmed later in Gallagher's career. They are somewhat amusing but ultimately pale in comparison to earlier shows like "Stuck in the 60's" and "The Bookkeeper". Overall, this is perfect for any stand-up comedy fanatic, and a purchase you won't regret.

Just like Gallaghers signature watermelon smashing act, this box is funny, witty, and impossible to get back together once opened. That is the big problem with this set. If it was not for that detractor, I would give it an R rated 5 stars. The quality of the DVDs inside are excellent, with live shows filmed well and an overabundance of Gallagher's wry humor. Definitely not for younger audiences as he swears his way through sex and drugs, only taking it easy on rock and roll. Still, his humor is much cleaner than just about any comedian today, so it seems somewhat refreshing from the current crop of trash mouths who don't seem to know how to use brains to make jokes. Gallagher definitely makes you think with his humor, showing an intelligent wit only minorly tainted with terrible English and a modicum of swearing. I highly recommend this for adult audiences as a great way to get a laugh and activate your brain at the same time. A smashing good time.

So hilarious!,

From Gallagher's older shows to his new ones, this collection is awesome. I purchased the Sledge-O-Matic collection as well, which has these performances in it as well. This collection has many hilarious shows put onto three discs. It is a must see for all Gallagher fans. I recalled all the times I sat around watching him jump around on that big prop couch. Enjoy!

Gallagher is funny and smart! He may not be the cutting edge comic, but he has certainly earned his place among the best comics. This DVD set has 11 shows on 3 disc and is a worthy purchase for fans.

Great stuff from Gallagher but the package itself is a nightmare!!!,

The bulk of Gallagher's material is great to have in one place but this packaging is horrible!!! Trying to decide which is worse..."The Munsters Season Two" or THIS. I think this one is.
DVD designers are getting creative with their ideas but they don't have the consumer in mind. It's VERY aggravating removing the discs from the packaging and replacing them when finished without bending the cardboard all up. I'd like see how wrecked everyone's copy of this will be in a year compared to mine. 5 stars for content. 0 stars for package design. |
