An absolute "must-have" for anyone who lives or works aboard boats,
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Galley Guru: Effortless Gourmet Cooking Afloat (Paperback)
Galley Guru: Effortless Gourmet Cooking Afloat is a gourmet cookbook especially for anyone faced with the challenging task of cooking on the seas - with strictly limited space that won't necessarily stay stable! Yet gourmet cooking (rather than just subsisting on canned stews) is entirely possible with proper preparation and organization. Recipes ranging from "Jiffy Hot and Sour Soup" to "Pouch Potatoes", "Tequilla Shrimp", "Chocolate Ginger Pie" and much more feature not only step-by-step instructions, but also symbols denoting whether a given dish can easily be prepared at a remote anchorage, while the boat is moving, at heavy seas, etc. "The secret to cooking in a small space, especially one that won't stay still, is to be very organized. Use a plastic shoebox for the spices you need for the meal. You can put spice bottles in it and put it in the sink so it doesn't slide around as you are cooking." An absolute "must-have" for anyone who lives or works aboard boats for an extended period of time, yet is determined to prepare the best possible meals for themselves and others. Galley Guru is also highly recommended for anyone who has to cook in other tight and possibly moving spaces, such as on an RV or a train, or even a cramped college dorm.

A single man's kitchen guide,
By Fred Lee (Orange County, CA) - See all my reviews

Double wow. No, quadruple wow. As a single male, I have seen a lot of cookbooks, but nothing like yours. I think you have set a new standard for what a cookbook should be. I have even been telling my friends about it, and I have never done that before, not about a book on cooking. I really like the intro with preparation tips and ideas. Which foods to choose and how to best store them is something I have never seen before. The additional stories and descriptions of places provide an indication of your great ability as a writer as well. I look forward to more great recipes and humorous anecdotes.

More than a cookbook,

What I really like about this cookbook, aside from the wonderful recipes (a few of which I have tried and found fabulous, such as thai mussels in coconut broth with rum), is the information and stories behind the recipes. One gets to feel that you are there when they were being discovered and made up. You can read it like you would a fiction, except it is not a fiction it is real. I have never read a cookbook before, but I have read this one and I love it. I highly recommend it to anyone who would like more than just an ordinary cookbook, and it's not just for sailing.

This is a wonderfully written and illustrated work of art. Only put it down to eat some of the great dishes. Full of great storage and preparation techniques while afloat or at home. Easily the cookbook of the year. Keep up the great work.

This is a fresh and original book. Great ideas and really easy gourmet. Really helpful on a boat but also in any confined space. I've tried 2 recipes and they were special. I liked the illustrations.
Good luck with it. Pat

This is a great cookbook for extended cruising. The recipes don't involve exotic ingredients that are difficult to find, even at home. Yet, it's not so basic that your cruising mates will get bored with your food. Also, what I appreciate is that no freezer is necessary - many so-called galley cookbooks assume you have freezer storage the size of a bathroom. Also, the book doesn't rely on cans of soup for sauces. It's a great book for a small to medium size boat. The author is very inventive but not so "out there" so nobody would eat anything. All palates are accounted for.

The book was delivered and I had expected to learn different things on cooking in a galley.
I was a bit disappointed. The Author has all the luxuries of a regular kitchen. As I do. I was looked for new ways to do things. A sailing friend who has no oven made bread on board by using a pressure cooker. Keep her beer cool by dragging in the water behind the sailboat. I find better receipes to make and use in Food TV Network receipes.

Not Very Practical Gourmet Cookbook for Cruisers,

This is probably a fantastic cookbook for someone on a super yacht who is located near great galley provisioning areas, or for someone who lives on land with a great gourmet supermarket nearby. Unfortunately, for me it is not very useful. We are sailing around the world on a 52 foot sailboat, and many ports of call don't have anything close to the ingredients called for in many of these recipes. Also, I haven't got the room on my boat to store all the gadgets necessary to prepare the meals. The recipes sound yummy, but this book should be titled "Gourmet Chef &/or Gourmet Kitchen Guru". I need something more practical.

She definitely knows how to cook and I would consider trying some of her recipes at home, but they are not useful for small boats with limited space. Without an oven and a decent refrigerator many of the recipes would be impossible. For me, many of the recipes were too "gourmet". I cook like that at home, but not on my boat. I was hoping for some useful recipes to cook with just a single burner and a grill. Oh well...will sell this one.
