Purchased for food storage. They have a rubber seal in the lid. Nice and heavy pails. Exactly what I expected.
The seller provided a letter from the manufacturer certifying their pails are food grade, when used at room temperatures or below.

UPDATE: A lot of confusion about #2 HDPE for food use. Found this info.

Typical 5 gallon `food grade' buckets are made of #2 HDPE, and are opaque, not allowing light to penetrate, while often advertised or labeled as `food grade'. The typical `blue' water storage containers or barrels are also made of high density polyethylene (#2 HDPE). The thing is, if you will be storing food directly in the bucket or if you will be using the container for drinking water, be sure to verify the material is safe before you purchase. Be safe.

*note
To be safe, the buckets that you choose to use for food storage should be `food grade' (unless you are inserting sealed Mylar bags).

All food grade buckets are made of HDPE #2 (high density polyethylene) but not all HDPE #2 buckets are food grade. Buckets that are not food grade will out-gas and leach into the container, and whatever is in the container.

HDPE #2 buckets that are not food grade will have been manufactured with a non-food-grade "mold release agent".

A mold release agent is what is used to help get the newly shaped plastic off of the hard mold that it was shaped from during the manufacturing process. Without the release agent, the new plastic shape will likely stick to the mold. Some mold release agents enable much faster production than others, but may be toxic to your health if later used with food stuffs.

If the bucket is marked specifically as food grade or USDA approved (or FDA or NSF approved), then it is food grade. Otherwise contact the supplier or manufacturer to confirm.

I've seen thicker more durable buckets but these will do nicely for my prepping. Let's be practicle... you get what you pay for. I see nothing wrong with these buckets and the price is the best on Amazon... or was at the time of my purchase at least. They are food grade, have lids (that you will need a pail lid tool to open once they are put on by the way) and the wire metal handles seem sturdy enough to hold 25 lbs of food I put in them. I'm using 2 of them for an emergency water purification system I'm making.

For those of you wondering what the safe plastics are for food storage... these numbers found in the little triangles on the bottom of the containers are the safe ones: #2, #4 and #5. Anything else is either not safe or iffy.

We have not loaded any food into these storage buckets yet. However, we have placed the lids on and removed them to confirm that they seal well.

I would've given this product a 5 but I found out after I bought these food safe buckets that you can pick up the same things from your local dunkin donuts for free. Apparently this is what they get all of their fillings in -__-
Aside from this oversight on my part, these buckets are great. Heavy duty and food safe.

I bought these to store 25 lb of old-fashioned rolled oats. BTW 25 lb of oats fills 2 of these. I used the 3rd bucket to make homemade sauerkraut before fermenting it in the crock.

I love that they are food-grade and BPA free. The company sends a fact sheet with the buckets which clearly explains the plastics used.

They do have the typical plastic smell but if you wash them out once or twice and let them air-out it is mostly eliminated. The lids are tough to get on (the first time) but if you have a mallet or hammer with a towel it will help tremendously. Great purchase.

These buckets are great. They do exactly what I was wanting them to do. The only reason I am giving 4 stars instead of 5 is because they are very hard to open - which is good for food storage, but, not so good when you are wanting to get at what you placed inside of them.

These buckets are a good price for being food grade. They are sturdy, and by adding food, some oxygen packs. These containers lock tight with the lids included.

Great customer service, sent this rather quickly regarding how to seal the lids. I haven't tried it yet, but wanted to post this for others who may be wondering. The buckets are great, just a little extra effort to get my head around these lids! Here's the sellers instructions they sent me:

PROCEDURE: DEAD-BLOW MALLET
1. The cover should be placed so that the gasket channel is centered directly over the pail top rim (curl) - misalignment can damage the components.
2. The pail should be stationary and if necessary in a fixture to insure that it stays centered during application.
3. The Dead-Blow mallet should hit the cover on the top of the outer channel (top of skirt) - the targets for the mallet blows should be based on a clock face: The 1st hit should be at 6:00, 2nd at 12:00, 3rd at 3:00 and final at 9:00.
4. It is recommended that a visual Inspection take place after cover application.
Recovering:
After the covers is applied. When the tear tab is pulled there are 4 lugs about 3 " long located equal distance around the circumference of the lid. The pail is opened by pulling the lugs outward until they come over the top lip of the pail. The lid can be reapplied by banging the cover above the lugs until they re-engage the top lip of the pail and snap down. Once this is done the pail should reseal.
