Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 1–4—From the breathless experience of watching the birth of a foal ("Wake up! Wake up! It's almost time!") to the gentle greeting of an old horse who "Lumbers, lumbers/To the fence./With noisy, flapping lips,/He fumbles for carrots/Frommy waiting,/Outstretched hand," this collection is packed with poems for horselovers. Through Alonzo's 21 fresh and lively offerings, youngsters will encounter a "Winter Horse" ("Shaggy/Furry/Rugged"), a show horse ("My jumper cruises/To the water hurdle,/Leaps mud and rails"), an imaginary horse ("My sea horse can/swish/with/fish/Near lacy seaweed"), a "Buckin' Bronco" ("I'm a whirlin', twirlin',/manic machine"), and more. Each selection is presented on a single page or full spread and complemented by Murphy's well-composed, beautifully textured art, created with watercolor, acrylic, and gel medium on paper. Many of the paintings feature realistic images of horses in action or young girls interacting with their mounts, while others are more whimsical. For example, a poem about a stampede across an ancient prairie ("Like a storm cloud spewing dust") is matched with an illustration that looks like a cave painting. This delightful collection will be relished by readers who "Gallop-o-gallop-o-gallop along," even if only in their dreams.—Lee Bock, Glenbrook Elementary School, Pulaski, WI

This book is excellent for the classroom! The imagery projected throughout the book guides students learning in a linguistic sense. The author weaves a beautiful tapestry of equine tales that's soothing for both young and old.

Horse. I wish for a horse. As a little girl, every birthday wish was for a pony....well, sad to say, it was never granted. But now here's another chance to enter the world of the daily life of horses with Gallop-o-Gallop. Ms. Alonzo's picturebook of heartfelt poetry takes the reader into the sensitive, raucous and sometimes silly world of horses (a poem about horse sneezes?, yes!), sure to fulfill current and bygone equine dreams. Beautifully rendered illustrations by Kelly Murphy (no relation, but I wish!) depict this world with sensitivity and a playfullness that will engage children of all ages. A definite coffee table book for kids...make that hot-cocoa table book, with two lumps of sugar please....for the horse...

I ordered this book after having borrowed it from the library. I wanted to have it for our personal collection. This book was recommended in a book with suggestions for quality rhyming books for children. The rhymes are fun and good quality. The pictures are also very pleasant as well.

I'm going to give this book to my horse-loving brother and sister-in-law, whose daughter is already grown. It's just as good a gift for adults as kids. But horse-crazy young girls will love it best, I think. Sandra Alonza has produced a collection of delightful horse poems that will play on all your emotions -- laughter to tears. For a grin, beware the SNEEZING horse. For a tug at your heart, visit "Old Horse." Kelly Murphy's exquisite paintings capture Alonzo's poems in jewel tones: a bareback galloping across the prairie, a shaggy winter coat, a dreamtime unicorn; it's all there.
