5.0 out of 5 stars Fun Game/Sim - Adults will not get bored!!
I love horses, but am not a horseracing person. So it took a little time to get familiar with terms (ie: furlong, betting systems, G1, G2, claiming, "Beyer" speed indexes).
You start out (in Season Mode) with no money & race cheap horses (basically low level claimers) - don't expect to win with them, but they help you win more money & experience to then purchase...

3.0 out of 5 stars don't buy it
ok, this game was fun for a while, but it is so hard. I have raced 20,25,30 races and only won 1 of them. the stamina goes down so fast, that you can't even try the long races. you just can't win. the only fun part is training and breeding. I enjoyed that part. the rest was hard.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun Game/Sim - Adults will not get bored!!, August 4, 2003

This review is from: Gallop Racer 2003: A New Breed (Video Game)
I love horses, but am not a horseracing person. So it took a little time to get familiar with terms (ie: furlong, betting systems, G1, G2, claiming, "Beyer" speed indexes).
You start out (in Season Mode) with no money & race cheap horses (basically low level claimers) - don't expect to win with them, but they help you win more money & experience to then purchase better horses. In season mode, you do ride the horses (& there is a practice mode to get used to how to do this). You also can wager on races to get more money.

You are not eligible to enter all races until (for ex), your horse has earned enough money, or you have won enough G1 races (like in real life). Horses do peak at a certain age, have their own racing style (front runner etc), surface preference (dirt, turf), innate characteristics (speed, stamina, guts, distances etc).
When you think you have some "keepers" breed them & create a Secretariat of your own. This is where it gets really fun! There is a website where people upload the horses they bred & you race against each other (using a artificial intelligence jockey). Theres even real trophies that you can win at the end of the season...

There is another mode "Free Mode" that functions like a racing arcade game & you also have the option of NOT riding here, but watching horses you picked to race (& then of course bet on too). A nice feature of Free mode tho, is that you can import into free mode a horse you bred (from Season mode) & race it against the best (or worst) game horses to see how well it will do against specific horses.

Although not specifically mentioned, if you know silks, you will see that famous horses from real life & their running styles, are represented here (Ferdinand, Secretariat, Dubai Millenium, Man O War, many, many famous ones!). More about this (& many other features), are explained on the aforementioned website.

This is a good game folks, & you won't be able to put it down!

4.0 out of 5 stars Vast Improvement over Gallop Racer 2001, October 29, 2003
By
"jimmyg24" (Prince George, VA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Gallop Racer 2003: A New Breed (Video Game)
Gallop Racer 2003 has many new enhancements over its predecessor. Actually, it a totally new game. The reward system is much better as you earn both money and points. Money can be used for betting or improving facilities. Points are used for acquiring horses. Breeding horses actually takes a year from mating until a foal is born. You now have more control over your foals success because you can train them before and after they begin racing. Winning a race requires more understanding of your horses abilities and race conditions, it's no longer merely a case of beating the horse to death with the whip down the stretch. Game negatives for me are the limits on the number of horses you can hold for stud/breeding, a limit of 6 active horses for racing, and the Hall of Fame. Overall, the game has repeat playability as there are many hidden and locked features.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for anyone who enjoys racing, April 26, 2003
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Gallop Racer 2003: A New Breed (Video Game)
Gallop Racer 2003 is a great game for anyone who enjoys horse racing, or really any kind of racing. The game is VERY in depth and holds endless possibilies. For those of you who played the previous version, the new one offers more in depth racing, including having you control your whipping. One of the best new additions is horse attributes which create:
#1 More possibilies for your horses
#2 A new way to create the perfect horse.

If you liked the first game, or love racing, this is the game for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Great Game for those that are new to the Sport, July 14, 2003

This is a great horse racing game, especially if you are new to the sport, or are buying this game for a younger child. However, if you have ever been involved in horse racing, or read about it in depth, I would reccomend G1 Jockey 2003 as the better game for you. I have recently purchased both, and have found the G1 Jockey more entertaining to me, but that is probably because Horse-racing has become my life. However, I have a younger sister who hates the G1 Jockey because she doesn't understand Horse-racing very well, and is learning about the sport by playing Gallop Racer. I also believe she enjoys it more because she gets to own the horses, and breed them, instead of riding for different trainers on different peoples horses.

Graphic wise this is a good game, the only thing that is really missing from it is steeple chase races.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Horse Racing Game Yet, June 22, 2004
By

I have had the pleasure of playing all three Gallop Racer games, and this one is by far the best. You actually get to see your foals grow from 0 to 2, not just have them instantly be 2yro. And for those who complain about the lack of training, look no further! Once a month for 6 months, you get the chance to turn your green colt/filly into a knowledgeable racing champion... or the sport's biggest dud. And for the first time in the series, there is NO limit on how many races you can enter your horse in, making it possible to gain titles you couldn't with the other games. You are also able to bet on the horses, and keep the money you earn. Indeed, the only faults that this games has is no winners cirlce, and that you can only breed once a year. Happy Racing!

5.0 out of 5 stars REALLY GREAT GAME!!!!!, February 24, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Gallop Racer 2003: A New Breed (Video Game)
I thought this was a really great game! At first, it's a little hard to win the races and to pass jockey school, but overall the game is GREAT! You can own/train/race and breed your own horses. I also like the game because you can pick your silks and jockey. When your foal is 2, you can train it and pick out its gear too. Later on in the game, you could also be asked to come to the world jockey series. I WON THE SERIES!!! On free mode, you can ride on any track. Ride any horse, AND pick your rivals!! VERY GOOD GAME!!! BUY IT!!! AWESOME!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Awsome Game!, April 5, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Gallop Racer 2003: A New Breed (Video Game)
This game is awsome, not kidding! There are not many girl playstation games out there, and if you like horses this is one of them!
I got this game a year ago, and I now have two playing accounts. On both I am B rated (the rates go from worst to best in this order E,D,C,B,A,S,SS. It is chalenging at first, as my cousin and brother are still E rated, but fun to raise and train your own horses. One of my foals came in seventh for horse of the year!
There is one down though I would say. In my opinion, you should be alowwed to own more horses. The maximum is 6 horses.
I recomend this game to racing fans AND horse lovers. It is fun to raise your own foal and whatch them progress.
*****rated deffinatly!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent game!, April 21, 2003
This review is from: Gallop Racer 2003: A New Breed (Video Game)
This game improved on the previous Gallop Racer in many areas. You won't get bored in this one as you did in the other one. It is more difficult and challenging to ride the horses as well as their are many more races you can run in overseas. You can unlock many races as well. I highly recommend this game.
