5.0 out of 5 stars Greatly improved over GR2003 and G1 Jockey
With the challenge from G1 Jockey the people at Tecmo got busy on improving Gallop Racer. They've taking some ideas from both G1 and GR2003 and combined them. As all other horse games are, it's very addicting. Yet with G1 you end up getting bored eventually since there is no breeding and no chances to unlock different areas or functions. I liked G1's actual racing feel...

versus
2.0 out of 5 stars Game sucks
Game did not come with instructions. I am a huge horse racing fan, who also bets part time professionally. This game has horrible graphics and the game play stinks. I will not be playing it again. I had high hopes since the reviews were good.

I liked G1's actual racing feel more than 2003, but GR2004 is majorly improved in that area. You can now feel the ride of the horse more in GR2004 (like in G1 Jockey). The added feel of the pumping of the horses head is a much needed improvement. Another major change in the new game is the actual use and feel of the reins. The horses are more realistic while turning (albeit more difficult and less machine like). Like all new games it takes awhile to get the timing of the "stretch spurt" down. The main thing Tecmo has taken from G1 is the fact that you have to bargain and interact with trainers for your rides. This is a very complete horse racing game. Also you can, and need to bet on races to earn extra gold (you can't bet on races you are in). You need the extra gold to buy, and unlock other areas. GR2004 still has great graphics, and has much better "in race" sound effects. As for the Background music (while they offer a decent variety) I just found it much more enjoyable with the music all the way off. Lastly, Quarter Horse great announcer Ed Burgart gives the call! I can't wait to get home and play some more!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars For horse lovers, January 14, 2005

O...wow. This is the best horse game I have ever played! I can't imagine a horse racing lover not adoring this game. There's so much you can do - so many races you can ride in - and I don't think there's a time limit to the amount of years that you're a jockey! I like how you can progress to riding better horses as you get better. It sounds really obvious that you should be able to do that, but some games don't let you. Some horses have really cool abilities you can use to help win races, like Strong Heart. That's my favorite. You can also breed horses, which I haven't done yet, but I'm positive it'll be great! If you love horses and especially horse racing, BUY THIS GAME!

5.0 out of 5 stars Gallop Racer 2004-AWESOME!!, October 31, 2004

All of the Gallop Racer games are FANTASTIC!! You get the full feel of the whole racing thing in this game. You ca, buy, and even breed horses, you bet, build your own course, better effects than even '03's. It is SO addictive!! You start playing; you can't stop!! I'm rank SS in both of the and have top notch horses. But even when you get this far you STILL don't win EVERY race. WAY more challenging than car races. (Yes I am a girl, and 12 if you want to know.) That's why I rank it-*****!!

5.0 out of 5 stars The best racing game of ANY kind, August 11, 2005

(I'm repeating my review of the original GR for those who happily stumbled on GR2004.)
I'm a big horseracing fan and I follow the races even minus the betting. I'm also a veteran computer gamer meaning I have played countless driving and racing sims. The beauty of this game is the UNPREDICTABILITY of each race. Like in all classic racing sims from the old "Street Rod" to "Gran Turismo" the same formula is used here: Build, Race, Win, Upgrade - but with the intriguing twist of each horse's individuality. The game itself is not so simple. As owner/trainer you must be careful to place your horse in the proper race. As jockey it's up to you to give your mount every possible chance. Ultimately what will keep you entranced with this game is what you can't do: In other games we "Save" before each race and "Restart Race" if we lose, being wiser from the experience; here it will be a new race each time.
I recommend this game to the problem gambler going "cold turkey", for his horseracing fix, as the action is SO real. To the uninitiated you will develop a deep understanding of why "The Sport of Kings" continues to fascinate royalty and commoner alike through the ages.

5.0 out of 5 stars So Realistic!, June 18, 2006

Gallop Racer 2004 is THE Game to buy! It Rocks! So you start out as a rookie jockey riding the lowest, slowest, most delicate horses in the entire world! I recomend Nozawa, he's got pretty good horses. So anyway, It takes a couple of years to get a lot of horses. But when you run across a good one, You can win a G1 race wich means---BABIES! LOTS AND LOTS OF CUTE, ADORABLE, CHAMPION BABIES THAT YOU GET TO WATCH GROW! It is awesome, but be warned. When you breed, only put your best racehorses in the pasture. I tried to get some nice young uns, and my first four turned out ransid. Here are all the names of my Original Horses from oldest to youngest("AND" means they were born the same year): Special Bear (6), Rum Racer (5), Blue Cupid AND Blue Sky (4), Traffic's Heart (3), Cupid's Girl AND Dream Catcher (2), Dream Victory AND Free Cat (1), In Stride AND Eastern Lily (0). My best mares so far have been Risky Dream and Desert Spring. My best Stallions so fare have been Easy Traffic, Dancing Monster, and Gray Line.

I got this game about a month ago, and since then I have not been able to put it down! You start out as the lowest jocky riding the slowest horses. it takes some time to get the hang of it,and even in easy mode it's hard to win.it took me a while to win, but now i'm the best jocky! you can win many awards. after a while, you can earn a My Horse, a horse you are main jocky of. you can retire a my Horse for breeding and make Original Horses,a horse thatyou can watch grow from a foal to a two year old. once your original horse is a two year old, you can negotiate to ride it. i think this game is the best game ever!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT, GREATER, AND MORE GREAT!, August 3, 2005
A Kid's Review
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Gallop Racer 2004 (Video Game)
Gallop Racer 2004 is a great game! But don't be fooled by the "SO easy to play!" signs. It's great, but you need to work to win! You can't expect to win the first time out, or you'll lose until finally find "The Horse", as I call it. But if you have patience, you'll finally win a race, therefore giving you your next goal: G1. These are top class horses, so you need a top class horse to beat them. While I have won these races with C and B rated horses, I'd try to get a S or SS horse (a.k.a. REALLY good horse) to do the right the first time. For those of you who like to be yelled at(I won't ask why), choose Shibayama or Cook as your first trainer. Those of you who don't really care, I'd choose Nozawa! You have been warned that Free Mode and Battle Mode are VERY boring! But that is just my experience! And remember: you can be the best rider in the game, but it isn't just the jockey. The horse has to be good, too. Well, I have to go play Gallop Racer! Good Luck, and thanks for reading!

I could not stop playing this game when I first got it!! It has great graphics, and when you're in the pack while racing, you can actually feel the horses hooves poubding on the ground. If you don't like racing however, this game might bore you. You can breed your champion horses also! Great game!

= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Gallop Racer 2004 (Video Game)
This is the best Horse Racing game that I've ever owned. You start out just being a jockey for one person, but after you win another trainer will approach you, and as you get better, you get more and more offers for rides. Eventually, you get to start training horses of your own, and after you win a G1 race with one of those horses, you can buy a paddock and start breeding. I HIGHLY recomend this game for any Horse racing lover
